Top Gun: Maverick’s Action Sequences Pale in Comparison to Glen Powell’s Twisters

The 2022 film features Tom Cruise in his iconic role of Pete Mitchell, with a gripping storyline and high-intensity action scenes that put the film in a league of its own. Cruise, who loves to push the boundaries of action films, took the cast and crew of the film to the skies to learn real aerial skills to showcase to his audience the authentic experience of being a fighter pilot.

As a result, the entire cast had to follow a flight training program created by the Jack Reacher actor. The training program included an intense 3 Month F-18 Training Course, that made Powell and the rest of the cast extremely sick.

However, that painful G-force conditioning and doing extreme aerial stunts are nothing in front of the action sequences that are featured in his Twisters. He shed more light on the topic while talking to Fandango’s Big Ticket.

During the exclusive interview, Glen Powell opened up about how the storm sequences in the film got pretty intense because it “all happens in a oner.”

He then continued that the film teased “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time,” as he had to get dragged across a pool by a wire. He said,

We shot that in December, with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.

The Hit Man actor explained that the reason the action sequences are so intense is because they have to make everything look authentic, which even included “humans getting sucked up into a tornado.”

Each sequence pushed them to the edge and part of being an actor is that “it can’t be delicate.” Glen Powell added,

You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado. But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re watching real stuntmen getting sucked up into the sky, you’re watching trucks move across [the field], you’re jumping into a pool and you’re getting dragged… it’s a fully physical experience because the investment as an actor that you have to have is like, it can’t be delicate.

Well, the scenes do look intense because the actor and the crew members have decided to give an authentic experience to their viewers.

Glen Powell Clarifies That His Twisters is NOT a Follow-Up on The 1996 Flick

For ages, a sequel to the 1996 film of the same name featuring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, it was a massive hit that grossed $495.7 million via The Numbers. Hence, the idea of a sequel was always there; when Hunt pitched the idea, the studio discarded it.

With Powell’s film around the corner, he has decided to make it clear while talking to Vogue that his upcoming disaster film is not a reboot or a sequel to the 1996 film. He said,

It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.

Since the film is going to be an individual project, expectations from the project are high, as the original film has become an evergreen watch that fans can’t get enough of.

Twisters is set to release on July 19, 2024.
