Books are a great way to expand one’s understanding of the Gears of War universe, as they provide a deeper insight into many different characters in the story. Games are often restricted to limited perspectives, which hinders expansibility and detailed storytelling with in-depth character explorations.

Through books, players are exposed to a hugely overlooked version of the world they are already aware of through the game, but with more fleshed-out characters with complete arcs. One Gears of War character’s death faces a similar fate in the game as her incomplete arc fails to justify her death.

One Gears of War character’s death was not well received by people, as they labeled it as total bullshit and were very annoyed with the game for putting them in such a situation. According to some fans, the character deserved a complete ending.

Anya Stroud was one of the most beloved characters in the game, as people believed her to be the most human, having flaws and insecurities and the ability to balance them with self-discipline, which made her more likable than any other Gears characters, both in the novel as well as in the game.

Strous’s character barely scratches the surface in the game and that’s the reason her death was not at all well received.

Was Anya Stroud a good character ? What did you like most or love about her ? (I still feel her death was total bs)

The difference in media is a big factor. It is only fair to give games an easy way out, as games are often stuck with limited perspectives to explore and fail to offer a detailed story because games do not have the liberty of time as novels have.

Having said that, it is also fair to say that it is not 100% necessary to understand the books to know what is going on in the game. The game does a great job of functioning independently of the novels.

The books expand on the characters, events, and universe of Gears of War without missing major plot points.

Some people feel that books about games are useless, as they see no point in writing a book when you can’t incorporate things from the game entirely.

This is a fair point but needless to say, books offer a mere extension of the universe, they are not the primary source of consumption and do not even intend to be.

Gaming and reading are two very different experiences, and they should be enjoyed independently of each other, even if one is inspired by the other, as both will offer unique aspects of the same story.
