If you’ve ever been confused by the enormous family tree of Elden Ring‘s gods, don’t worry. You’re neither the first nor the last, all thanks to Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Though, there’s more to it than just being a tangled web of connections. There are some fascinating insights to be gained from studying the family tree, and one Elden Ring fan has compiled the entire thing, sparking some interesting discourse.
Elden Ring’s Humongous Family Tree Is Hiding Something

The primary Elden Ring family tree involving Marika, Radagon, and Rennala is one of the most interesting and confusing things to look at, mostly because despite how fleshed out it appears, much is still unknown.
We can map out who descends from who for the most part. Some mysteries were solved by Shadow of the Erdtree. It remarked Rellana’s relation to Rennala as her sister, and Messmer and Melina as the children of Radagon and Marika alongside Malenia and Miquella.

Thanks to one Redditor’s hard work, we have a visual tree we can look at for reference. One reply seemed to find one aspect of the tree quite odd though, specifically regarding some important characters from the base game.

As they mention, all of Rennala and Radagon’s children’s names start with ‘R,’ Marika and Radagon’s with ‘M’, and Marika and Godfrey’s with ‘M’ and ‘G’ somewhere between. According to them, Godwyn seems to be the only anomaly.
The naming convention for Marika and Godfrey’s children might be completely different, however, and there’s a good reason why.
Godwyn’s Name Doesn’t Break the Game’s Naming Convention

Godwyn, Morgott, and Mohg were all born from Marika and Godfrey, but only the former shares a similar naming pattern to his father. Why?
Morgott and Mohg are Omens, a race considered cursed and impure. As a result, they usually have their horns cut off at birth which can be fatal.
As they’re children of Marika, they were exempted from this cruel process. Instead, they were shackled and locked up underground like many other Omen, which one could argue is even more cruel.

Considering Marika shunned her children to this degree, it only makes sense that their names differ from Godwyn’s. The Goddess wanted to separate their existence from the rest of her children, and doing it physically wasn’t enough.
Aside from Godwyn, we know Godefroy and Godrick are also descendants of the Golden Lineage. Their names follow a pattern, i.e., starting with ‘Go,’ just like Godfrey who started the lineage.
