Antony Starr plays the ruthless villain Homelander in The Boys. Starr is still processing that the beloved series is coming to an end since he had so much fun playing the character. When IGN asked him about Eric Kripke‘s announcement (via X), Starr shared that it would be a sad day when he stopped playing Homelander.

He revealed that it had been a fun ride along with the other actors in the series. Starr also added that he wanted the show to go out on a positive rather than just pushing it for further seasons. He shared that everyone working relentlessly on the show would want to exit proudly. He added that five seasons would be the right time to end it. Starr shared with IGN:

I’m very conscious that I want us to go out on a really positive, strong note. I don’t want us to be the show that pushed one season too far and fell flat. On behalf of everyone that works on the show, I think we deserve to go out with our heads up, not feeling like we should have gone earlier or we overstayed our welcome, so to speak. I think it’ll be about the right time, but also it’ll be a hard thing to leave.

Starr’s comments about shows that overstayed their welcome will apply to some of the fan-favorite series. For instance, Kripke learned his lesson from creating five seasons of The CW show Supernatural. He exited after the exhausting shoot of 22 episodes per season, but the show went on for another 10 seasons.

A few examples of other shows that went on for too long include Grant Gustin‘s The Flash with nine seasons, Stephen Amell’s Arrow with eight seasons, and Tom Welling’s Smallville with 10 seasons.

When Amazon picked up The Boys for a fifth season, fans expected the series to run for another few seasons. Some fans felt that it was the wrong move for the series to run for more seasons. However, Eric Kripke’s announcement made it clear that The Boys had a clear exit strategy in place.

One of the first stars from the series to respond to this news was Jack Quaid, who played Hughie. He took to Instagram to share the news and express his thoughts on the same. Quaid shared with his fans that Kripke had always intended to end the series after five seasons.

The actor promised that Kripke and the amazing writers would deliver an incredible fifth season. He also added that it was a rare opportunity for a TV show to go out on its own terms. He shared via Instagram:

Yes @theboystv will be ending with Season 5, but don’t worry! This has been the plan for a long time. This will be the ending our show-runner intended. I trust @erickripke1 and our amazing writers to deliver an incredible finale. In TV it’s such a rare gift to be able to go out on your own terms, so I’m immensely excited to see what season 5 has in store.

Earlier, Kripke revealed to ScreenRant that he had already convened the writers room for Season 5. He also told EW that the five-season plan was a “stupid screenwriter thing” about three and five being magical numbers for writing.

The Boys Season 4 is currently streaming on Prime Video.
