When the Dragon Ball franchise shifted from Dragon Ball Z to Dragon Ball Super, a lot of things changed, especially within the characters. While some characters had a change in their personalities, others experienced a change in their abilities. And although it worked out for most of the characters, there was one who lost his touch.
This character is none other than Frieza, one of the most menacing characters in the entire Dragon Ball franchise. Before the start of Dragon Ball Super, Freiza was considered the most terrifying villain in the history of Akira Toriyama’s magnum opus. His mere appearance during the Frieza saga in Dragon Ball was enough to put fear in the minds of other characters.
However, a recent Reddit discussion thread points out that Dragon Ball Super softened Frieza in order to introduce new villains who could look more dangerous compared to him. Not only that, Dragon Ball fans mentioned other villains who looked darker than Frieza from Dragon Ball Super.
The Menace of Frieza as a Dragon Ball Villain
Once deemed the Emperor of Universe 7, Frieza, along with his imperialist army that he inherited from his father, ruled the universe and wreaked havoc however he saw fit. He was known for destroying planets and was feared because of his cruelty and menace as a ruthless tyrant who could not be stopped no matter what.
He single-handedly destroyed the entire Saiyan race of Universe 7 and is responsible for the deaths of millions. He has been featured quite a few times in the Dragon Ball franchise, with most of his appearances being part of the Dragon Ball Z series. Despite being a villain, Frieza developed quite a big fanbase who believed there would be no other villain like Frieza.
When he decided to visit Planet Namek and find the seven Namekian Dragon Balls and use them to wish for immortality, he met his match in the face of Goku, who had to unlock the power of Super Saiyan in order to defeat the dangerous villain. However, even after that, Frieza became stronger and kept coming back to fight Goku and his group.
Dragon Ball Super Has Softened Frieza
There are very few villains in the anime and manga industry who are as ruthless as Freiza. Akira Toriyama’s creation of Frieza worked in the favor of the community, as he inspired a lot of other manga creators in terms of creating villains. However, when Dragon Ball Super began, the character of Freiza saw a drastic change.
According to a post by u/bluemarvel99 on Reddit, Dragon Ball Super made Frieza look goofy, which took away his aura as a cruel tyrant. He got mixed up in his need to take revenge on Goku and forgot his true identity.
Thus, Dragon Ball fans mentioned other villains who would have taken the top spot in the overall competition of being the most ruthless villains in the history of Dragon Ball.

Although there have been quite a few villains who have tried to replace Frieza, none of them comes close to the terrifying persona of the former Universe 7 Emperor. While Dragon Ball Super might have reduced Frieza’s ruthlessness, it could not change his cunning and twisted personality.
