Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa, one of the greatest manga creators of all time, has never shied away from expressing her love for George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise. She has talked about it multiple times, but what Fullmetal Alchemist’s fans don’t know is that Arakawa is also a fan of another Lucas franchise that features Harrison Ford as the main character.
While Arakawa has been a supporter of Indiana Jones, there is one particular actor from the series that she has been a follower of for a long time. This actor is none other than Sean Connery, the famous James Bond actor who also plays Henry Jones, Sr., a Scottish professor of medieval literature and the father of Indiana Jones in the movie.
Although Arakawa expressed her love for Sean Connery in Indiana Jones, she might have just done more than that. There is a chance that the Fullmetal Alchemist manga creator might have used Connery’s role in Indiana Jones as an inspiration for one of the characters in her own magnum opus.
Hiromu Arakawa is a Huge Sean Connery Fan
In a one-on-one interview with Arakawa that was featured in Perfect Guidebook 1: Fullmetal Alchemist Profiles and later translated by (DoA)nimation, the manga creator was asked about the movies that she liked to watch. While talking about her love for the Star Wars franchise, Arakawa revealed that she is also a big Indiana Jones fan.
Arakawa stated:
I like the Star Wars series and the Indiana Jones series. Darth Vader is the greatest villain of all time and Sean Connery is the greatest old man.
After giving away the names of the movie franchises she loves, Arakawa went on to say that from Star Wars, she feels like Darth Vader is the greatest villain of all time, and Connery is the greatest old man of all time.
Connery is considered to be one of the most legendary actors of all time, especially for his contribution to the James Bond franchise. Besides that, he has also worked in numerous other films like Murder on the Orient Express, The Man Who Would Be King, etc.
Hiromu Arakawa Took Inspiration From Sean Connery
Hiromu Arakawa has never officially accepted this, but Sean Connery’s role in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Van Hohenheim, the father of Edward and Alphonse Elric, shared a lot of similarities. While these similarities might not be visible at first glance, upon a deeper evaluation, they become crystal clear.
Both Henry Jones Sr. and Hohenheim were obsessed with knowledge and went so deep into it that they abandoned their families. Both are a little absent-minded and although they have a decent knowledge of their surroundings, they have to rely on their children to help them with work that involves force.
And finally, despite being distant from their sons, they try to reconnect with them in their own ways. Arakawa’s love for Connery and his character in Indiana Jones certainly helped her create one of the most important narratives of the Fullmetal Alchemist series.
