The Avengers films in the MCU have been the biggest money-makers of the franchise. With every installment, the ultimate ensemble piece where various MCU heroes come together to fight a common enemy grew in size and scope. The last two Avengers films were a cultural phenomenon that catapulted the franchise to unprecedented heights.

The Russo Brothers were a major factor in building up the MCU to the end of the Infinity Saga. Their work on the last two Avengers films established them as bonafide filmmakers. The MCU has grown significantly since Avengers: Endgame, and with them reportedly in talks to return, they have a much bigger fish to fry this time.

The Russo Brothers have directed some of the best MCU films including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Through these films, they have proven that they can handle gigantic scale, enormous characters, and deliver a thrilling experience with a solid narrative.

The MCU has introduced new characters since Avengers: Endgame and it was recently reported that Avengers 5 could have about 60 characters which is almost double what Endgame featured. The Hollywood Reporter has now reported that the directing duo are in talks to return to the MCU to direct the next two Avengers films.

While the news may seem exciting for many fans, one can’t help but notice that the MCU is now bigger and more chaotic than ever. The franchise is now overstuffed with too many characters/storylines, and the OG Avengers are not there anymore (except Thor, Hulk, and maybe Hawkeye). If they end up directing, they will have a much bigger and more difficult job with the films than their earlier efforts. Here are some of the reactions on X,

The consensus is that fans are excited about their return but are still dubious about the MCU right now given their recent track record. The stakes are 10 times higher than before and their return also does not automatically mean that they will be able to execute this near impossible task. It remains to be seen if the duo’s frequent collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely also return to write the next Avengers film.

The OG Avengers’ Text Chain Is Still Going Strong According to Scarlett Johansson

The OG Avengers comprising of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Mark Ruffalo still keep in touch to this day. They have a private text chain and one wonders what the stars talk about and discuss in their private group.

In an interview with The New York Times, Johansson states that the text chain is still active and the group discusses everything on it. The actress hopes that the contents of the text chain never reach the public eye, as they talk about every good/ugly thing including bad reviews. She said,

Yes, that’s true. But hopefully, nobody will ever read it. Everything goes on in there. I mean, really. If somebody’s gotten terrible reviews, that could be something that comes up.

Fans will surely feel the absence of the OG Avengers when the upcoming Avengers films hit theatres. While some of them are still around and may appear in them, it won’t be the same as the previous Avengers films. Avengers 5 and Secret Wars are currently scheduled to release on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027.
