After Joss Whedon exited Marvel despite delivering the highest-grossing films the franchise had to offer at the time, Kevin Feige moved to the Russo brothers for the next two Avengers flicks. Having previously transitioned from TV to the big screen with the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and later Civil War, it’s easy to see why they were chosen to conclude the Infinity Saga.
This decision would prove to be a huge success for both MCU and the Russos, as the Endgame duology not only made a gigantic sum at the box office, it was also critically acclaimed. But this wasn’t the case when they joined forces with MCU’s Spider-Man for a crime thriller in 2021.
The Russo Brother’s Reunion With Tom Holland Fell Short

Since parting ways with the MCU, the Russo Brothers have enjoyed success with their Extraction features on Netflix, which saw them joining forces with MCU star Chris Hemsworth. However, their other shot at reuniting with an MCU hero ended up going south, as upon its release back in 2021, Cherry, starring Tom Holland, failed to make it big among fans and critics.

While many commended Holland’s acting, the film itself was seen as a letdown for the Russos’ previous works, which reflected in its score at the Tomatometer. Opposed to touching the high 90s as they did with Endgame, Cherry scored a mere 37% among critics., which hit Apple TV after a limited theatrical run in the U.S.
However, with the Russos now potentially set to return to the MCU again for the next two Avengers, they might finally go back to smashing box-office records.
Tom Holland Might Be the Key Component in the Next Avengers Features

With the future of Chris Hemsworth in the MCU still uncertain, many felt that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would be the one to lead the next generation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. And now with the Russos reportedly in talks to helm the next two flicks, this appears more likely. Following Joe Russo‘s previous statement regarding Holland’s webhead, it’s safe to say Holland might serve a similar role as Robert Downey Jr in the Infinity Saga if the reported deal locks in.
Tom is stepping into the role that Robert Downey once occupied for Marvel, which is the favorite character, and in a lot of ways the soul of the Marvel universe,
Although the Russos once stressed that they were done with the MCU after Endgame, the recent reports of them being talked to helm the next two Avengers features don’t come as surprising. Considering the duo’s love for the storyline of Secret Wars, they previously mentioned that this storyline could potentially draw them back to the Marvel universe.
Avengers: Secret Wars is currently slated to release on 7 May 2027.
