Yet, across the Pacific, the spotlight shifts to a South Korean actress who starkly mirrors Bale’s razor-thin dedication. Lee Tae-Im’s confession of subsisting on mere morsels of rice daily parallels the spine-chilling fervor of Bale’s 100-calorie-a-day regimen.

This extreme diet was brought on by insecurities after a photo shoot with fellow actresses who had toned bodies. Feeling inadequate next to them, Tae-Im resorted to dangerous measures to achieve a certain standard of beauty:

I did the photo shoot with actress Park Han-Byul and Lee Chae-Young, who showed up with perfectly toned bodies. I became ashamed of my body and was embarrassed to stand next to them. I got so upset that I cried.

Embarking on a journey toward health and self-care is no small feat. Indeed, Tae-Im is the epitome of such courage and commitment. After coming under scrutiny for her extreme diet that led to a concerning weight drop, Lee has embraced a transformative path for the sake of her health.

Even so, Lee Tae-Im continues to be a talented actress with a notable film and television career. She has portrayed Ji-hee in Shin Jai-ho’s film Days of Wrath and Jang Soo-hyun in Han Jung-hwan’s series Don’t Hesitate.

The Machinist: Christian Bale’s Jaw-Dropping Transformation

While the director initially planned to achieve Trevor’s skeletal appearance through loose clothing and make-up, Bale took it to the next level by embarking on a months-long diet that consisted of nothing more than an apple, water, coffee, and occasional whiskey (via Screen Rant). The result? A shocking weight loss of 62 pounds, leaving Bale at a mere 120 pounds during filming. That being said, the actor consumed roughly 100 calories per day.

It is quite frightening to see Bale’s normally muscular body juxtaposed with his emaciated form in The Machinist. In a candid Radio Free interview, the actor, 50, revealed that despite the self-destructive urges that came with such drastic weight loss, he felt more mentally at peace than ever before. He mused:

It ended up being a very nice place mentally to be when you get that skinny. Man, you’re calm, you know? Because you just can’t waste any energy whatsoever. So you just do what’s necessary. I was incredibly happy.

Despite the physical toll it took on him, Bale’s efforts were not in vain.

Critics praised his performance in The Machinist, applauding his commitment to the role and the depth he brought to the troubled character (see JoBlo). And while the film may be nearly two decades old, Bale’s transformation is still a topic of discussion today.

The Machinist is available for streaming on Paramount+.
