Based on the iconic Karate Kid franchise, the show Cobra Kai initially began streaming on YouTube Red before the platform closed down and the series was acquired by Netflix. Splitting final seasons into multiple parts is not new to Netflix as many classic shows like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and The Sopranos have done it.

However, the William Zabka and Ralph Macchio starrer being split into three parts of fifteen episodes after two years of filming was an annoying update for fans. Still, creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald mentioned to Gizmodo’s io9 that there was a reason for them to split the show into three parts.

While they wanted to end the series with the final season, they were sure that they needed more than ten episodes to finish the story arcs and hence, decided to make fifteen episodes. Hurwitz said,

This season, it was like, ‘Okay, well, three chunks of five would make sense.’ It’s almost like three acts in a bigger story. And that’s just something that we decided to do creatively. And when we talked about that with Netflix, they loved the idea of the three drops. And that’s where it came from. So we’ve known this for a very long time. And it is all by design.

A movie featuring William Zabka and Ralph Macchio as well as Jackie Chan is also in the works that is set to release in 2025.

Cobra Kai is streaming on Netflix.
