The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, was released in theaters on July 18, 2008, completing 16 years this year. The film is widely remembered for late actor Heath Ledger‘s performance as the Joker.

The Australian actor was also considered for the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman in Batman Begins. However, Nolan later cast him as the Dark Knight’s arch-nemesis in the sequel but Ledger’s casting was met with backlash.

According to reports, some fans of the comic book character were unhappy with Ledger’s casting as they thought he did not fit the part. One person made the following comment on a message board, disapproving of Ledger’s casting:

The user’s comment references actor Paul Bettany, who was also rumored to be in contention for the Joker role.

Interestingly Ledger and Bettany worked together on the 2001 medieval action-comedy A Knight’s Tale. However, the role went to Ledger and Bettany eventually found recognition as a different comic book character, with his long stint in the MCU, first as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S and later as Vision.

Christopher Nolan Explained the Decision to Cast Heath Ledger as the Joker

During a 2012 interview with IGN, Christopher Nolan opened up about his decision to cast Ledger as the Joker. Nolan admitted that he did not remember exactly what led to him casting Ledger in the role.

The director revealed that he met with Ledger to discuss the role. He quickly realized that he and the actor had the same concept in mind for the character.

We both had exactly the same concept in our heads of who that guy would be in this film in the way that we’d interpreted it.

Nolan made the above statement underlining how Ledger’s approach to the character was what prompted him to cast the actor in the role.

At the same time, Nolan stressed that Ledger understood the anarchic nature of the Joker, and its psychological aspects, which are clearly reflected in the latter’s performance. Therefore, Nolan stuck to his guts despite the negative reactions to the casting with Ledger winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and proving the naysayers wrong.
