Jack Quaid has made a name for himself after playing Hughie Campbell in The Boys. Besides attracting widespread fame for his role in the satirical show, the actor also earned a spot in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The actor has recently revealed in an interview that he also auditioned for the role of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU release.

As strange as it may feel to imagine Hughie Campbell in the iconic Red and Blue suit, Jack Quaid admitted that he knew the result, but still wanted to try it out. Looks like the actor was not satisfied with only a voice role, especially after his take on the superhero in the animated My Adventures with Superman received critical appreciation.

Superman, set to release in 2025, will present a new take on the character by James Gunn after Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill’s version. Reportedly, David Corenswet‘s new Superman will not follow Snyder’s footsteps and be a beacon of hope and light. When the auditions were going on, notable names like Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney, and Andrew Richardson were also considered.

Although the audiences loved Corenswet’s casting in the role, it is so surprising to hear that even Jack Quaid auditioned for the role. The actor shared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that innumerable people auditioned for the role and he also sent a tape despite knowing what the response will be.

According to the Vinyl actor, he knew that his physique would never be fit for the role. He was confident that his background as the voice of a cartoon Superman would never work, yet the actor casually auditioned for the role and seemed totally cool with the rejection.

I think everyone did. If you fit a bill…it’s like just one of those things. I didn’t get very far at all. I put myself on tape, and it went nowhere, and that’s fine… I remember getting that audition and being like, ‘Yes, I’m the voice of Superman in a cartoon,’ but I don’t think I really fit the bill physically, and that’s fine, it’s totally cool.

No matter how much expected it was for Jack Quaid to lose the DCU role, we can always expect him to get some other character in the universe. His background in the genre will also present an upper hand. Besides that, his association with DC may also be prolonged after My Adventures with Superman recently announced (see THR) its third season after two successful outings.

Even though Jack Quaid lost a dream role for many aspiring actors, he could not be happier for David Corenswet’s casting in the role. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid’s son shared that he knew Corenswet for a long time after working with him for an unreleased pilot years ago. He added that the casting is accurate as the Pearl actor truly gives the Last Son of Krypton vibe.

[It’s] totally cool, specifically because I actually know David Cornswet a little bit; we did a pilot years ago that never went anywhere. But he’s one of those people you meet, and you go, ‘Oh, yeah, whenever they need another [Superman], it’s probably going to be [him]. That guy is Superman!

Fans are insanely excited for Superman as the James Gunn film will show an aspect that was missing from the DCEU movies- Superman as a ray of hope. Despite embodying Superman, Cavill’s version was a brooding and comparatively darker take on the Man of Tomorrow.

Alongside David Corenswet, the film has a magnificent cast with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and many more. Milly Alcock is also rumored to make a cameo appearance as Supergirl before featuring in her own Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie.

Superman will be released on July 11, 2025, while Jack Quaid can be currently seen in The Boys, streaming on Amazon Prime.
