Audiences have called Homelander a bastardized version of Superman and Captain America. Another iconic DC superhero other than Superman as mentioned earlier is Batman. The fan-favorite caped crusader has become a seminal character in the superhero lexicon. However, Starr had an interesting statement on Batman which may not fare well with die-hard fans of the character.

The Boys‘ satirical deconstruction of the superhero genre has been its greatest strength as it turns the genre on its head. While the MCU and the DC universe continue to deliver the typical superhero experience, the Amazon show flips the formula with its social/political commentary majorly through its lead character Homelander.

Antony Starr has given audiences a whole new diabolical superhero that has no irredeemable qualities. The actor was recently at a fan event in Denver where he was asked about his favorite superhero. While the Banshee star revealed that he was a Batman fan when he was a kid, he started believing that the character really wasn’t a superhero as he grew up.

This comes at a time when the actor has been fan-casted many times in James Gunn’s DCU. The Homelander actor told the packed audience that Batman is actually a ‘dude’ dressed in a bat costume with fancy gadgets. However, he is excited to see what Gunn does with his new DCU. Starr said (via YouTube),

He’s not a superhero. He’s actually a guy running around in a bat outfit with some fancy toys & a chip on his shoulder about money… but it’s gonna be really exciting to see what happens with DC with James Gunn.

While Starr’s comments are understandable, some die-hard fans may take issue with his comments about Batman not being a superhero. The character is loved mostly for his detective skills and mysterious nature. In addition to his superheroics with his gadgets and the action, it is his way of dealing with his tragic past that is more compelling, which may be what Starr is alluding to.

Spoilers for The Finale of Season 4 of The Boys

The credits scene showed Homelander coming to the place where Soldier Boy has been kept in cryo-sleep since the end of season 3. In an interview with TVLine, Antony Starr revealed that Homelander is conflicted about meeting his father who tried to kill him. The actor also stated that it is such a loaded moment and the character is unable to process what he is seeing. Starr said,

I think it’s such a loaded moment. You know those moments in life where you know something very intense is happening, but you can’t process things in the moment? We don’t work like that. I wanted that moment to be he knows what he’s coming in to see. He’s coming into the room, he knows what’s there. But then the reality of seeing his father, the father who wanted to kill him… It’s such a conflicted moment.

The finale teases an apocalyptic world in the final season where a volatile individual like Homelander rules with no barriers. It remains to be seen what his dynamic with Soldier Boy will be in the final season after what transpired between them before. All 8 episodes of season 4 of The Boys are now streaming on Prime Video.
