Having been the lead on the show for almost five seasons, Costner went on to leave the show in the first half of its fifth season, focusing on his epic western of a film franchise, Horizon: An American Saga. However, after bombing at the box office and receiving some very critical reviews, Costner is not feeling the best, especially given that he had some very high hopes for Horizon.

An insider report brought to light by Life & Style magazine has revealed that Kevin Costner is in a pretty tight spot thanks to his investment in Horizon: An American Saga. A lot was riding on the film, given that there was a reported $38 million of the actor’s own money invested into the film, which failed to be recovered by the domestic box office. According to the insider:

He really believed in these movies, still does, and is taking the news pretty hard.

While Costner really believed in the film and what it could achieve at the box office, it turns out that the film was one gamble that the Yellowstone alum lost. It must also be noted that Costner exited Yellowstone given that he was focusing on Horizon: An American Saga, which was supposed to roll out a series of months.

New Line seems less keen on releasing the second installment of Horizon

New Line has revealed that it will be delaying the release of the second installment of Horizon: An America Saga to ‘allow people more time to discover the first one’, but Costner is horrified that the abysmal performance of the first film might prompt the production company to drop the IP altogether, revealed Life & Style Magazine.

While Yellowstone was as successful as it was, it made sense that Constner would shift his focus to Horizon: An American Saga, given the amount of his own money that was riding on the production.

However ill-received his exit from the show was, it is safe to draw the conclusion that Costner bet on the wrong horse, and it might just have caused him to enter a new period of struggle in his career, right when he was in the midst of a resurgence.

Yellowstone can be streamed on Netflix
