With the world of The Boys taking drastic measures to survive in whichever way possible, some of its characters are quite literally a hair’s breadth away from meeting an excruciating end. As the gory, risqué series enters the final leg of its grotesque and transformative journey, some essential elements of its plot need to be rehashed before the fans can witness a satisfying conclusion to the story.

While some characters desperately hold on to whatever remnants of power they still possess under Homelander’s age of anarchy, it is a tragic fate for those who are pitiably human, even in the face of a nuclear super-human war. However, the most pitiable of all is the one thriving right under the nose of Vought and the Seven.

The Doom of Ashley “Ashlee No-Last-Name” Barrett

The Boys has given its audiences a feast for the senses. With a vivid and graphic take on the word NSFW, nothing seems beyond reach for the world of Supes and monsters. But while in any other universe, the two would be canonically on opposing ends of the war, in the world of The Boys, the line separating good from evil is not only blurred but refuses to be drawn altogether.

Among the few characters that exist purely as convenient and expendable plot devices, Ashley Barrett should have definitely been higher up on the list than the head-popping anti-hero Victoria Neuman. However, a plot twist is most delectable when it takes us by surprise.

Suffice it to say, the unexpected death of VP-Elect Neuman while “Ashlee” scampers off (almost Jack Sparrow style, if one looks closely) to get herself dosed up on V is why the fans love the show so much.

On the other hand, the shock of the surprise wears off when mid-transformation, the scene cuts away to another scheme unfolding somewhere else in the unfortunate chain of events. Not only did the audience not get to witness Ashley’s newfound superpowers but were robbed of a climactic reveal which, by the look of things, is eerily similar to James McAvoy’s Beast in 24.

In the absence of solid proof, all one can do is theorize about the potentials and possibilities. For Colby Minifie, those possibilities are endless — ranging from physical mutations to follicular ones. However, given Ashley’s long-standing love-hate relationship with her hair, the most voted superpowers also pertain to hair, although not necessarily those on her head.

As Minifie herself theorized in an interview with TV Guide:

I’ve pitched a couple of things. I’m really excited about some of the ideas that have been floating around. I know it has to be humiliating and I know it has to be something disgusting – those are the two requirements that will only fit in the world of The Boys.

One of my pitches that I don’t think is gonna make it is that she pops her arm up and her armpit hair grows really fast and lassoes people and then she can pull them out. I was thinking something hair-related would be funny because of her baldness. But that might be too on the nose.

Meanwhile, fans on Reddit have their own theories on the subject. While some claim she could turn into Medusa (“like big ole d*ck guy but with hair”), others have taken a more Mortal Kombat approach by deeming her to be The Boys universe equivalent of Sindel. But whatever the result may be, one thing is for sure: The Boys as well as the Seven are in for a surprise.
