Matthew McConaughey was the quintessential lover boy in the 2000s before the McConaissance era in the 2010s. The actor starred in a string of successful romantic comedies including The Wedding Planner, Failure to Launch, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, Fool’s Gold, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
The latter marked the first collaboration between McConaughey and Kate Hudson and is one of the most beloved rom-coms. Fans have loved the duo’s chemistry in the film and have been clamoring for the pair to reunite on-screen. Hudson recently expressed her openness to return in a sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but fans are concerned that Hollywood will ruin the legacy of the original film.
Fans Are Apprehensive About A Possible Sequel To How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Matthew McConaughey was one of the promising actors who made their breakthrough in the industry in the 90s. Following his breakout role in Dazed and Confused, he made a big impression as a lead star in A Time To Kill and U-571. However, by the 2000s, he shifted hears and transformed himself into the romantic lead of many successful films.
One of the most memorable rom-coms that he did at the time was How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, where he starred alongside Kate Hudson. The film chronicles Ben and Andie who come together with separate agendas of their own: Ben flexes his ability to make any woman fall in love with him, while Andie employs serval tactics to get Ben to leave her.
The pair eventually fall in love and have a happy ending. Audiences still have a soft spot for the film even after 20 years. Hudson recently reflected on the film and the possibility of reuniting with McConaughey to do a sequel. In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the actress revealed that both of them are open to returning if the script is right. Hudson said (via Variety),
All that matters would be the script and if Matthew and I were into the script. I think we’re both totally open; it has just never happened.
Fans were not entirely happy with the prospect of a sequel. With Hollywood currently in a trend of rebooting and putting out sequels of classic films, audiences fear that a potential sequel of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days might ruin the reputation of the beloved rom-com. Here are some of the reactions on X,
Oh come on just stop already. Stop ruining good old films with unnecessary reboots and sequels.

While both McConaughey and Hudson might be open to a sequel, they indeed say that the script should be right, and do not want to simply return for a cash grab. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a huge hit when it was released in 2003, grossing $177 million against a $50 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). It remains to be seen whether a potential sequel gets made.
Matthew McConaughey Is Proud Of The Longevity of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Even after 20 years after the hit rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, people continue to discover and appreciate the chemistry of its lead stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. In an interview with E! News, McConaughey revealed that the ending of the film could have easily led to a sequel.
The actor further pointed out that the film was one of the better rom-coms he did in his career and he enjoyed being a part of the film. McConaughey said,
I mean, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is teed up, you know, teed up for one that you could easily do a sequel. And that was a really good one. As far as romantic comedies go, that was a really good one. And it lasts! People still love that one. I enjoyed that one quite a bit.
McConaughey has steered away from the rom-com genre since the 2010s and a potential return to it could be exciting. After a brief hiatus from acting, the actor is set for a comeback with the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, and the drama film The Lost Bus.
