An intense rivalry within an anime is a potent tactic that creators often use to hook the audience and fuel a compelling storyline in the main plot. The constant clash of ideologies and skills that is often sewn together with a complicated backstory adds to the lore’s richness.
Such was the case with Mobile Suit Gundam, where the intense rivalry between Amuro and Char would keep its fans at the edge of their seats, anticipating future confrontations between the two. Nevertheless, their raging rivalry was one of the key aspects that made the show so charismatic.
However, their rivalry often had gayness to it to a certain extent, which a ton of fans had noticed. Though some fans deny it, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series creator, got candid about their rivalry, dropping a bombshell revelation about their vendetta and the masked emotions behind it.
Mobile Suit Gundam‘s Creator Puts Rest to One Rumor About Amuro and Char’s Rivalry
Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Gundam has been one of the biggest anime names in the otaku community. Over the years, it has established itself to be one of the most consistent franchises that has always managed to impress its viewers with its unique plot and character dynamics.
As a result, the series has been a renowned name since 1979, which has brought in multigenerational fans who think it is one of the best mecha series out there. However, the rivalry between its two main characters, Amuro and Char, would often lead to speculation among its fandom that they have a queerness to it.
Cedgehog (@cedgehoganime), one of the renowned anime content creators out there, shared a YouTube short on his official channel where he talked about this notion, but the fandom denied it. However, he has returned with valid proof and ensured that he is not forcing his “gayness onto the anime.”
The creator opened up that his viewers were indeed right because he did present wrong information and clarified that it was not “accidentally,” and Tomino-Sensei has opened up about their character dynamics and the homosexual tendencies linked to it.
In the fanbook of the show via AnimeNewsNetwork, Yoshiyuki Tomino opened up about his desire to bring out a “raw/carnal feeling” each time he showcased Amuro and Char in the same frame, “to the degree that you might wonder whether the two of them are homosexual.”
This surprising revelation was a bolt from the blue to some fans as they decided to drop their opinion in the comment section of the YT Short.
Mobile Suit Gundam Fans React to Tomino-Sensei’s Comments
With Cedgehog (@cedgehoganime) dropping the bombshell of a revelation to the fandom as he quoted the creator’s words, he left the interpretation to the fans of the series, as he calls himself a mere “messenger” of anime news.
Nevertheless, fans had mixed opinions about the comments of the creator, as they left their opinions in the comment section of the brief video. They commented,
@rdesignartes2520 commented, “Theres a reason why Naruto and Sasuke, Sephiroth and Cloud, L and Kira and many others are so intensely shipped together.”
@gabriellearuiz2753 commented, “Another example: Dazai and Chuuya from BSD”
@lisebarnes924 commented, “Wait, it’s all gay?” “Always has been.”
@wildcaffeince8906 commented, “nothing can beat the “You saddled me with unnecessary feelings” from Ace Attorney imo”
@ProgInVain commented, “my takeaway from this is that i have to form an intense rivalry with someone”
While these might sound too surprising to some, rivalries in anime series often have this subtle tension between the rivals, something that the viewers have felt and the creators have refrained from answering at times. Regardless, Amuro and Char’s feud will go down as one of the most iconic rivalries in the history of anime.
