A year after the pop culture phenomenon Barbenheimer, Margot Robbie’s Barbie still seems to be part of the cultural zeitgeist. The existential comedy broke multiple records upon its release in 2023 and was the highest-grossing film of 2023. It also gained a spot in the worldwide box office records list with its $1.446 billion box office collections.
However, its spot at the highest-grossing films of all time list is threatened by this year’s breakout success Inside Out 2. The Pixar film reportedly crossed the $1.4 billion mark and is only a few thousand dollars away from beating Barbie. It is also reportedly $10 million away from being the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Inside Out 2 Set To Dethrone Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Frozen II In The Highest-Grosser List
Margot Robbie’s Barbie was released last year along with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in what is considered to be one of the greatest cultural clashes in movie history. The ‘Barbenheimer’ reportedly revived theatrical sales by a huge margin due to the meme that encouraged viewers to do a double-feature of the tonally opposite films.
Barbie broke multiple records at the box office as it became the highest-grossing film of 2023. It also broke the record for the highest-grossing film made by a solo female director and became the highest-grossing live-action comedy of all time, taking over Home Alone and The Hangover Part II. It also became the fastest billion for Warner Bros. Pictures (via LA Times).
While the Margot Robbie film enjoyed its cultural status as one of the most important films of the decade, its top spot at the highest-grossing films of all time list is under threat from Inside Out 2. The Pixar film reportedly grossed $1.443 million at the box office and is only a few thousand dollars away from dethroning Barbie.
The Pixar film is also set to be the highest-grossing animated film of all time, taking over Disney’s Frozen II and The Lion King.
Inside Out 2 Also Threatens The Avengers’ Top Spot On The List
The Pixar film Inside Out 2 has been running without blinds ever since its release in June. The film became the fastest animated film to gross the one billion mark and is also the third highest-grossing animated film of all time. It has garnered the 15th spot in the highest-grossing films of all time list (via Box Office Mojo).
While there are still a billion more to go for the film to actually threaten the top spot of the list, it reportedly is only a hundred thousand dollars away from taking the 10th spot from The Avengers. The iconic superhero film redefined the comic book genre with its team-up of multiple Marvel heroes and earned over $1.5 billion at the box office (via Box Office Mojo).
Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame retained the second spot in the list, with its $2.7 billion box office revenue. While it was the highest-grossing film of all time, the re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar put it back in second spot (via Deadline).
Inside Out 2 is still running in cinemas while Barbie is available to stream on Max.
