In an extremely candid interview, Miura Sensei spoke on new character introductions and his wish to not create something akin to a “man’s world” in the story. He wanted to strive for balance, knowing that there had to be many women who would move the story in important ways. Miura brought depth and complexity into the Berserk universe to ensure his creation would transcend generations.

First of all, I want to add more female characters. Since having only a “man’s world” is not well balanced, one or two new female characters are needed. And important new characters should be introduced as well. They are related to Guts in a way similar to the Band of the Falcon, instead of taking their place. Staying alone is too hard for Guts. However, these characters aren’t as close to him as the Band of the Falcon. They can be rather hostile with him. I’ve conceived some characters with whom the story development can be varied.

This quote offers an interesting glimpse into the mind of a master storyteller—a vision toward which he stands committed, in order to create a rich, inclusive world.

Kentaro Miura Tried To Bring Balance To Berserk With Complex Female Characters

Guts from Berserk

Kentaro Miura, the brain behind Berserk, is a sharp-eyed visionary, and he felt the need for diversification in his story, that is – a need for more female characters. So, he aimed to bring in more women to prevent it from going the way of Naruto and One Piece, which were criticized for a male-dominated cast.

Among the clearly outlined surroundings, Miura had woven an abundance of the female element into his story, which set Berserk apart from other works published at the same time, and established its seat as a modern classic. This audacious idea reflects not only the progressiveness of Miura’s ideas but also ensures that Berserk will continue to fascinate readers with its subtle, multi-dimensional characters.
