The new characters and the storylines have mostly failed in building up the next big narrative, but through the multiverse tool, the studio has been able to do some wild shenanigans by implementing past elements of Marvel history.
As the reviews of Deadpool & Wolverine have stated, the film is a love letter to the Fox films as much as Spider-Man: No Way Home is with the Sony-Marvel films. With that in mind, there have been rumors of past MCU actors returning to future films as the franchise is at its ‘legacy celebration era’.

Evans has already been rumored to be playing The Human Torch from the 2000s Fantastic Four film in Deadpool & Wolverine. Actors like Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman have returned recently in their iconic Marvel characters and thus it’s not impossible to bring back guys like Downey Jr. and Evans. When Discussing Film asked Kevin Feige about whether the chances of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans’ return have increased following Jackman’s glorious comeback, the studio head was surprisingly optimistic. Taking the latter’s return as an example, he stated that it is a sign that the comeback of the Avengers’ leads is possible if great care is taken. Feige said,
That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [‘Deadpool & Wolverine’] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken.
Various rumors have circulated about the duo’s return in the upcoming Avengers films. In the era of the multiverse saga, it is entirely possible that the actors can play a variant of the characters they played earlier. Fans should now wait for some official news about the future of the MCU at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con event later this month.
