Berserk is like one of the Big Three of anime of the Seinen genre. Late Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus has been ongoing for over three decades. After the mangaka died in 2021, people thought the manga would come to an abrupt end. But thankfully, Kouji Mori took up his role and is continuing the manga. While he may not follow the late mangaka’s word-by-word pattern, the fans are happy to see that the manga is ongoing.
Berserk had a monthly chapter release since it was a Seinen manga. It gained massive popularity and was even adapted into an anime. When a manga gets adapted into an anime, it is a joyous moment for the mangaka. But Kentaro Miura was unmoved. During an interview, he revealed his thought process. It showed his elite mentality as a mangaka.
Late Kentaru Miura Was Careful With His Work

Kentaro Miura began Berserk’s serialization in 1989. Since his school days, he fantasized about writing a manga. Soon, his fantasy turned into passion, and Berserk was born. He used to spend most of his time thinking about his magnum opus. Even after his magnum opus was turned into an anime, he was least bothered about the fame and success. He did not let them come between him and his passion.
During an interview, the late Miura sensei was asked to share his feelings about the Berserk anime. He said,
“Right now, the TV anime has things hyped up, so it’s a time where I feel a real sense of having made something. The wild ride doesn’t last forever, though, so I’ll eventually go back to my plain daily life and get locked back into my battle with the manuscript [laugh]. I’ve received recognition for doing this for so long, but my feelings towards my manuscripts are still the same as when I was a rookie.”

For him, the adrenaline rush was a momentary thing. Instead of something short, he wanted to experience something calming that would be consistent. His passion was the only thing that he found peaceful and satisfied him. Finishing his task was the only thing he cared about. These small details often differentiate a good mangaka from a great mangaka. As for Kentaro Miura, he definitely belonged to the second category.
Berserk Is One Of The Most Detailed Manga Ever

Apart from being one of the best-selling manga, Berserk is also a pretty detailed manga. Kentaro Miura worked hard on every minute detail. The background score and the characters feel too real. It is a masterpiece. He never did anything extra. Everything in Berserk is in the perfect ratio. Kouji Mori is also trying to replicate the late mangaka’s perfectionist mentality.
His passion was so intense that the readers could feel Guts’ pain and anger. Miura sensei will have one regret. He longed to give Guts a happy ending after he endured so much pain. Hopefully, Kouji will fulfill the late mangaka’s wish. Currently, Berserk has 42 volumes. It might be a long way before the protagonist gets his happy ending.
Berserk is available on Dark Horse Comics.
