Escalation of Freedom claims to bring a host of additions, such as a higher difficulty level, new enemy types, and new mission objectives, to make things interesting for even veteran players. Now, some fans are sharing their mission ideas and what they want to see in the game.

Helldivers 2 Fans Demand Off-Planet Missions

The current set of missions have a common thread linking them together: each one is based on a planet. This planet requires liberation, which requires the Helldivers’ presence on the celestial body. But what if some missions did not include planetary conquest? One Helldivers 2 fan has a theory of how that could be achieved.

Redditor mint_dulip posted to the game’s subreddit with an idea for a potential mission type that could shake things up. They propose a mission on a ship rather than a planet, such as a craft of Super Earth under attack by Helldivers 2 Automatons. The Helldivers are deployed to either reclaim the ship or destroy it and everything inside it. They even state some potential side objectives to add more pressure on the player.

It’s an interesting concept and should introduce a sense of originality for Helldivers 2 fans who have expressed a feeling of repetitiveness liberating the same planet. Replies to the Helldivers 2 missions idea are positive, indicating many others in the community would like a change in setting.

One reply states the mission type would be an ideal quick 15-minute excursion and good for short stints.

If Arrowhead takes this feedback into account, the new mission type would also be grounds for new mechanics. Given the more close-quarters approach, massive stratagems such as the 500 KG bomb or Orbital Precision Strike would not be possible without great collateral damage, so more miniature stratagems would be introduced.

The Escalation of Freedom update will bring several new features for fans to enjoy, and the most interesting among them are the new enemy types. A foe some would be familiar with is The Impaler, a Terminid that was there in the first game. It has been brought back to the sequel and will prevent Helldivers from retreating with its burrowing tentacles.

The Brood Commanders are also getting a revamp. Not only will they be more difficult to take down, but they will also spawn a new type of bug as reinforcement. The Automatons are also upping the ante of their assault by enlisting the help of artillery strikes that will send a barrage of explosive rockets toward the Helldivers.

To make things even more challenging, Arrowhead Game Studios is introducing Combat Rating 10, the highest level of difficulty possible. It should be a good challenge for veterans who have spent hours in the game and are now feeling the fatigue of repetition.
