Red-Haired Shanks and Monkey D. Luffy share a special relationship in Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. The former set the Pirating fire inside the latter. Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, is a Marine Admiral and is considered a Hero by them. Even though he was raised by his grandfather, he always wanted to become a pirate and longed to become the freest person in the entire world.

When Netflix announced One Piece Live Action, the fans were scared that it might ruin the legacy set by the manga and anime. But the opposite happened. The live-action set its own identity. Several elements were changed, except for one. During an interview, One Piece director Marc Jobst revealed why the cast and crew wanted to replicate the entire scene frame by frame.

One Piece director Marc Jobst did great with the first two episodes of One Piece Live Action. He was given one of the most demanding tasks since the beginning would set the tone for the upcoming episodes. While he wanted the live adaptation to have a separate identity, he did not want to ruin a perfect moment. Eiichiro Oda gave his all in building Shanks and Luffy’s beautiful relationship.

While directing the scene, Jobst refrained from adding any new element, as It was perfect as it was. When asked about the unique relationship during an interview, he said,

“It’s an iconic element in the manga. So it was one of the very few scenes where I really wanted to clearly reference the framing of the manga by and large. We weren’t seeking to replicate in the live-action [version] the same frames that were in the manga. We wanted to honor the spirit of him, but that particular scene has such iconic imagery to it.”

Monkey D. Luffy never knew what fatherly love was. It was Garp and the Mountain Bandits who took care of him. So, when Shanks gave him the affection of a father, he could not help but do the same. Shanks was arguably one of the strongest pirates on the planet, and losing an arm could could have ruined his reputation. Still, he sacrificed his left arm to protect Luffy from a Sea Monster.

The passing of the Straw Hat was not just a parting. It was everything to Luffy. He named his pirate crew the Straw Hat Pirates, and more than himself, he cares about the hat. The entire moment was wrapped in love and inspiration. Shanks missing Uta and Luffy not knowing fatherly love made the emotion deeper.

Netflix’s One Piece Live Action season 2 is currently under production. The cast and crew are shooting in South Africa. With few new entries in the upcoming season, the fans have doubled their expectations after watching season 1. Several elements were changed in the live-action. But the fans have loved them. Garp getting introduced earlier, Usopp kissing Kaya, Merry dying, etc., are a few of the changed elements.

No scene was passed without the approval of Eiichiro Oda. So, he was fine with the changed elements. Oda sensei has passed the baton to the live adaptation. Like Shanks passing the baton to Luffy in the form of a straw hat, the mangaka’s approval helped create a separate identity for Netflix’s One Piece Live Action. The fans are eagerly waiting for the next season. With no official release date yet, the fans are expecting it to be released next year.

One Piece Live Action can be streamed on Netflix.
