Akira Toriyama is the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise. His decisions regarding characters and their designs often paid off. Goku and Vegeta turned out to be one of the greatest protagonists ever. Even though he is the creator of the franchise, there are times when his co-workers have better ideas than him. Being a great soul, he listens to them and decides about his magnum opus.

A similar incident happened in Dragon Ball Super. Toriyama sensei designed some of the popular characters in the Tournament of Power. The idea about the royal rumble setup was also his. But it was his anime staff who created two separate characters in that arc. After seeing them, the late mangaka thanked them for bringing great characters to the table.

Tournament Of Power Is Not Akira Toriyama Sole Creation

The Tournament of Power was one of the most anticipated arcs in the Dragon Ball franchise. The greatest warriors from all the twelve universes would enter the royal rumble. It was a great arc, considering the fans got to experience Son Goku’s latest transformation, Ultra Instinct. Apart from that, there were also strong warriors like Jiren, Toppo, Caulifla, etc. Initially, Akira Toriyama designed Jiren, Toppo, and Dyspo.

The anime staff wanted Jiren to be talkative, but the mangaka shifted that trait to Toppo. The rest of Jiren’s gang, the Pride Troopers, was designed by the anime staff. There was also one character that was created by the anime staff that impressed Toriyama sensei. The character was Kale. The idea about Kale came when Broly’s popularity was talked about during a conference meeting. Instead of a male Saiyan, they went for a female Saiyan to avoid similarities to Broly.

Toriyama sensei was impressed with the idea and created Caulifla to go along with Kale. During the tournament, the female Saiyans used fusion and became Kefla. Fans and the mangaka were grateful for the anime staff coming up with such an idea. They said, “I am truly glad the anime staff did this.” Even though Kefla was eliminated early, they gifted the fans one of the finest moments. Ultra Instinct Goku used Kamehameha in mid-air to defeat them.

With the information on Kale and Caulifla now public, fans found it interesting. Akira Toriyama structured most of the Tournament of Power. A few ideas were given by Dragon Ball Super director Ryota Nakamura, Dragon Ball Super producer Satoru Takami, and their entire team. Reddit users said that Kale looks like an homage to Broly.
