Despite originally starting as a BBC original, Peaky Blinders‘ popularity soon prompted Netflix to buy its rights in 2014 and rebrand it as one of its originals. Although the Cillian Murphy-led series concluded in 2022, it left an indelible legacy behind and its story is now set to continue in Netflix’s Peaky Blinders movie, which was greenlighted this year.
Although little is known about its plot and how it will build on the events of the show, Mission: Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson has now been added to the cast of this film.
Netflix’s Peaky Blinders Movie Adds Rebecca Ferguson
After garnering critical recognition following her portrayal of Ilsa Faust in the MI franchise and Lady Jessica in Dune, Rebecca Ferguson is now set to step her footing in the Peaky Blinders universe. Her casting announcement (via Deadline) in the Cillian Murphy-led film marks the first high-profile addition to the Netflix movie. While fans were already enticed to see how the film unfolds, Ferguson’s casting has added further excitement among fans, as she hasn’t been messing around with her projects.
Moreover, her performance as Lady Jessica, especially in the sequel, which remains one of the most acclaimed releases of the year, has fans convinced she will rock her new project.
Even though nothing is known about her role in the film, following the actress’ works in the past few years, which saw her going toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise, it’s reasonable to be optimistic.
Cillian Murphy Was Always on Board for More Peaky Blinders
Since playing Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning biopic, which deservingly earned Murphy the Best Actor accolade, fans are enthralled to see what the actor has stored for next. So, it’s not surprising to see the announcement of the Peaky Blinders movie breaking the internet, which will see Cillian Murphy reprise the role of Tommy Shelby.
His decision to reprise the role also doesn’t come as surprising, as after the series initially concluded in 2022, the actor expressed that he’d be open to returning to the role if there’s more story to tell.
It’s always about the story. It’s always about the script. If he feels like there’s more story for Tommy, then I’ll be there.
With screenwriter Steven Knight, who penned all 36 hours of the show, returning, it’s safe to say it’s just not Netflix’s attempt to make the most of Tommy Shelby’s popularity. And while the Batman Begins star went unrecognized at the Emmys for his brilliance in Peaky Blinders, fans will hope that like Oppenheimer it garners him the recognition he deserves.
