It’s a known fact that Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best role-playing games we’ve experienced in the last decade. The game brings a rich narrative, turn-based combat, and extensive character customization.

Even though it’s an incredible game, it doesn’t come without its fair share of issues and bugs. While most of the developers would outright smack players for exploiting these issues, Larian Studios opts for an approach that proves that they’ll always favor gamers!

During a presentation for Sofia Game Jam, Larian’s scriptwriter, Mihail Kostov, outlined the work and thinking that goes into developing an RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3. In the speech, he talks about edge cases, which are rare and unexpected scenarios that venture outside the limits set by the developers and can make or break a game.

While the studio’s priority is to ensure that the game is complete from start to finish, players will eventually find ways to break the game mechanics. Despite this proving to be quite troublesome for Larian, they wish to “fuel and award player creativity” instead of axing these aspects completely.

Designing for edge-cases in Baldur's Gate 3

Kostov outlines a particular example related to Lae’zel and her Githyanki questline, in which Voss hands her over a legendary sword in Act 3. However, players managed to find a way to get the weapon in Act 1 by casting the Heat Metal spell.

The easy thing would’ve been to block players from using Heat Metal on Boss, but Larian developers didn’t like that. They appreciate this stuff and fully support it.

We love this sort of stuff so let’s fully support it. Let players keep the cool weapon. They found a way to exploit the game, let them have it, it’s awesome.

Considering the fact that the game is still one of the most played titles on Steam despite an endless number of bugs, it’s clear that Larian’s approach to allowing gamers to find and exploit bugs is working. Let’s hope even Bethesda could incorporate some of this in their upcoming Elder Scrolls 6!

While it’s great to see Larian’s unique approach to the game’s glitches, many players are wondering if the developers are going to deliver a major DLC or sequel for the beloved game.

Unfortunately, during a presentation at CDC, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, revealed that the studio is moving on from the Baldur’s Gate franchise. While a sequel might happen, it won’t be developed by his studio anymore.

The series’ future is controlled by Dungeons and Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast, which will now choose which studio to lead the next game.

Although Vincke didn’t reveal what his studio’s next project would be like, many speculate that it could be a long-awaited return to the Divinity series.

With that said, have you found any interesting BG3 bugs? Let us know in the comments.
