With Kevin Feige revealing new projects Doctor Doom is going to be the star of, it might be that RDJ is set to face off against his old nemesis, Thanos, once more, but this time, it’s going to be in a whole new style. Fans absolutely cannot wait for what is about to come, because this showdown is going to be epic!
Robert Downey Jr. Returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom!
The MCU has been in a bit of a funk lately, with some promising projects running into Kang-sized problems, thanks to the Jonathan Majors drama. But there was a fix to it after all and a fantastic one too! At San Diego Comic-Con as Variety reported, Kevin Feige revealed a game-changing fix, Robert Downey Jr. is back, and this time, he’s rocking the Doctor Doom mask!
That’s right, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is getting a dramatic makeover and will now be known as Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters in May 2026. And just when the fans thought it couldn’t get better, Avengers: Secret Wars is set to follow in May 2027, with the Russo Brothers at the helm.
And as per how Marvel Studios will smooth things over, if the fans are guessing right, Doom will be busy dealing with Kang’s Variants, most likely off-screen, before he tries to rule the Multiverse. Now Chris Evans won’t be the only one who has set the bar high with his dual roles as Captain America and Human Torch, as Robert Downey Jr. is raising the stakes even higher.
Juggling both a superhero and a supervillain role effortlessly! It doesn’t get more epic than this. However, the real showstopper will be the full-circle moment in Secret Wars, as Robert Downey Jr. faces Thanos for one final showdown.
Robert Downey Jr. vs. Thanos 2.0 is Going to Be Insane!
Thanos has faced many deaths in Marvel Comics, but none compare to the brutal end he met at Doctor Doom’s hands in 2015’s Secret Wars. with Doom ripping Thanos’ spine from his body, which remains one of the most brutal scenes in the entirety of the Marvel Universe history.
Secret Wars, which fans are yet to witness on the big screens was a monumental event in the comic world in 2015, culminating years of buildup with the destruction of the Multiverse and the rise of Battleworld under the rule of God Emperor Doom.
After an epic war between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, Doctor Doom, having seized god-like power from the Beyonders, transformed into God Emperor Doom and sculpted Battleworld from the ruins of two destroyed universes.
In Secret Wars #8, as Thanos and his Annihilation Horde attack Doom’s Citadel, and that is when Doom is forced to confront the Mad Titan. Thanos, confident in his base form’s power, dismisses Doom as a mere pretender, this overconfidence kills him.

Thanos’ death in Secret Wars was an important moment that showcased how strong Doom’s power is even if Thanos returns later. This iconic scene, where God Emperor Doom effortlessly kills Thanos, has left a lasting impression on fans as well as the Marvel Universe! And as Avengers: Secret Wars approaches, Robert Downey Jr. facing the titan once again, and brutally ending his life will truly be an epic moment to witness on the big screen for sure!
