Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was promised to be one-of-a-kind, exhilarating ride full of hilarious quips by the Marvel Jesus and endless cameos. While it is exactly that and more, the movie has already broken many records and is on track to make several more.

As the X-Men are often pitched against the Avengers, Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine has settled at least one of the assertions surrounding the debate: money. While Fox’s X-Men movies are nowhere near the MCU’s average gross, Deadpool 3 proves that the mutants might reign supreme in terms of gross when it comes to the MCU.

When it was first announced that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman would be pairing up for an MCU film, many knew that such a film was going to be a potential blockbuster. If anyone had any doubts regarding the film’s potential box office success, the marketing and promotional stints of the film proved that it was on the right track.
Despite its anticipated success, the movie’s recent stint has shocked everyone and well-settled the X-Men vs. Avengers money war. The Marvel Jesus team-up with the Gruffy Wolf has shattered several records by grossing $438.3 million worldwide at its opening.
The biggest for any R-rated movie, the film made $205 million just globally. With such numbers so far, the film has surpassed Deadpool for the highest R-rated opening at the global box office and is now the 8th highest-grossing opening of all time domestically. Furthermore, domestically, it dethroned The Lion King as the biggest opening in July (via Box Office Mojo).
Not only this, but domestically this is the biggest opening for any film since Spider-Man: No Way Home and the second largest opening for any third installment of a movie, behind Avengers: Endgame (via The Walt Disney Company). It thus leaves behind the initial two Avengers films and several other MCU entries.

Now the eighth-best debut of all time and having the sixth biggest opening weekends for a superhero flick worldwide (a chart that is dominated by MCU entries), Deadpool & Wolverine’s record-smashing success looks more shocking when one realizes only 9 Hollywood movies have managed to gross $200 million+ during their opening weekends (via Variety).
Already the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2024, the film’s surprising success thus proves, that even with barely any X-Men, the mutants have the power to surpass Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when it comes to making money within the MCU.
Fans React to Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Massive Box Office Success

Deadpool & Wolverine was already anticipated to be a record-breaking success, but nobody had anticipated that it would be as much of a success within the three days of its release. Having helped MCU cross the $30 billion mark globally, the film is anticipated to show similar feats in the coming days.
Having surpassed several MCU films in terms of opening weekends, even at a time when MCU is deemed to be at its lowest, Deadpool & Wolverine has been unstoppable so far. So when the news of its massive box office success hit social media, this is how fans reacted:

So what happened to all the “Super Hero Fatigue” talk when Deadpool & Wolverine obliterated the box office this weekend? I guess if you make a good movie an audience will pay you money to see it? Lol
