So far, the series consists of a total of seven installments, with Borderlands 3 being the latest main installment, released in 2019. The game was a huge success for Gearbox. Since then, a shout for the next installment has been quite evident, and seems like it might have been heard.

In a recent interview with TheGamer, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has revealed that news on Borderlands 4 is coming “sooner rather than later.” In this interview, Pitchford basically discussed the next game in the series.

Rumors were already surfacing around the community about this highly anticipated title. That’s why the CEO has admitted that he himself is not that great when it comes to hiding secrets. In Pitchford’s words:

Oh man, I don’t think I’ve done a good enough job of hiding the fact that we’re working on something. And I think people that love Borderlands are going to be very excited about what we’re working on. These are fuzzy words, but sooner rather than later, we’re going to be talking about what we’ve been working on, and I can’t wait.

The promising words from the man himself clearly state that the upcoming project from Gearbox is indeed Borderlands 4, not any expansion of the previous game. Borderlands 3 already has an ample amount of DLCs like Bounty of Blood, Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, and many more. This fact clearly shows that the company is surely working on a main installment.

Despite saying it jokingly, the CEO himself knows that his company leaked some of the next projects unknowingly. In November 2023, the leak came from the LinkedIn page of Randel Reiss, who was the former technical director at Lost Boys Interactive.

Now, the interesting part is that this studio supported game development at Gearbox. During Reiss’s tenure, he worked on both Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2, both developed in Unreal Engine 4, as per his LinkedIn profile. That means the game was already in development, way before we thought.

Reiss might have left in 2022, but the sequels are in the active development stage right now, and the process is in full flow. However, there’s no official from the company regarding either of the titles. Pitchford too didn’t reveal much about the company’s upcoming projects. Still, he said:

I think I’m genetically made to try and create joy and happiness and build entertainment. I love movies, and I love video games; I love entertainment. So I’m grateful that we have so many great things coming with Borderlands, and I can’t wait to talk about the stuff that we’re working on with our fans.

The promising words from the studio are an air of relief for the fans who have been anticipating the installment for a long time. What’s your opinion on the upcoming title? Let us know in the comment section.
