The bond between the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece is one of the biggest strengths that the crew has had ever since they started sailing. They have been through some of the toughest times and still managed to come on top of it only because they trust each other, especially their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, who aspired to become the Pirate King.

Within the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy’s understanding of Zoro is the strongest, as they have been together since day one. Luffy trusts Zoro with his life, and Zoro has offered to give his life in Luffy’s place more than once. Zoro has also helped Luffy become a better captain, and he has promised Luffy to follow him until the end.

However, considering Zoro’s emotional detachment, some One Piece fans believe that if, in an unprecedented scenario, Luffy somehow dies, Zoro might not be as devastated as the other members of the Straw Hat crew.

The Underrated Bond Between Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro

When Zoro joined Luffy in his quest to find the One Piece treasure, he made it very clear that if Luffy tried to come between him and his dream of becoming the strongest swordsman in the world, he would kill Luffy. However, as the story progressed, Zoro’s connection with Luffy grew stronger, and they formed a bond unlike any other in One Piece.

Zoro’s loyalty towards Luffy reached a new point when he offered his life in place of Luffy during the Thriller Bark arc. That was one of the very first times fans understood what Luffy meant to Zoro. He even went to the lengths of begging his biggest rival, Dracule Mihawk, to train him so that he could get stronger and help Luffy achieve his dream.

The same respect is reciprocated by Luffy towards Zoro. Whenever Zoro has advised Luffy about something serious, Luffy follows Zoro’s advice and proves that he trusts Zoro as much as Zoro trusts him. He trusts Zoro with his life, as seen during the battle against Kaido, which easily explains what Zoro means to Luffy.

The Most Controversial One Piece Take About Zoro and Luffy

A few months ago, the popular One Piece podcast, thatonepiecetalk, posted a discussion about “If Luffy Passes Away, Who Would Be The Saddest Straw Hat?” The discussion turned into a heated debate as Usopp’s name came before Roronoa Zoro.

Luffy’s friendship with Usopp gave rise to a controversial assumption that Usopp would be devastated the most if Luffy passed away.

While it is a strong suggestion, Luffy’s bond with Usopp might not be as strong and diverse as with Zoro. Luffy and Usopp are mainly seen as the mischievous bunch who only try to cause mayhem for laughter. Granted that even Usopp has proven his loyalty to Luffy, it fades in comparison to what Zoro has done for Luffy.

Thus, Zoro might not be the first in terms of being emotional and cry about Luffy’s death, but he will be the one who would be the most devastated about it and could very well burn the One Piece world with his anger and rage. He sees Luffy as his younger brother, and even a slight harm to him would make Zoro wreak havoc.
