The actor had an interesting story about the time he revealed this inspiration to Anthony Hopkins. I once invited Anthony Hopkins over for dinner and he accepted. He came over and we had dinner together and I told him that’s how I approached Ace Ventura, a smart bird. And he went, ‘I do that.’ Hannibal Lecter is a cross between a crocodile and a spider with infinite patience and time to just wait for the perfect moment to strike. Frankly, it got a little creepy, I was like ‘More roast beef, man?

Carrey definitely has an affinity towards method acting, which was seen in his projects from The Truman Show to Showtime’s Kidding. However, Hopkins had openly expressed that he was not a fan.

Who the hell wants to be with some miserable grump because he wants to get his performance right, so you have to call him this or call him that? It’s so boring. I’ve been with actors like that, and they’re a pain in the a**, they really are.

They’re unpleasant to work with, and I don’t think they’re always that good either. I’ve worked with some awkward customers, fortunately not too many. I go out of my way never to work with them again.

Anthony Hopkins and Jim Carrey collaborated on the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Hopkins was the narrator of the movie, while Carrey played the titular character.
