Slated to appear as Gambit since the early days of Fox’s X-Men franchise, Tatum’s dream of portraying the character finally came true in the latest MCU flick. While many would love to see him spearhead his own Gambit film, it is highly probable that he isn’t going to be MCU’s Gambit after all.

It is not a secret that Channing Tatum has been dying to play Gambit since the early 2000s. originally slated to appear in X-Men: The Last Stand, the actor was written out of the script. And when it came to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts, leading to the fan-hated portrayal by Taylor Kitsch.

But things didn’t end there for he was next roped in a now-canceled Gambit film that was ultimately canceled due to budget issues and Disney’s acquisition of Fox (via Esquire). A terrible end to what could have been an incredible superhero movie, Tatum’s dream of playing Remy LeBeau finally came true this year through a cameo in Hugh Jackman‘s Deadpool & Wolverine.

As praised and appreciated his cameo in the film, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up much, since it is pretty unlikely the actor will get a standalone film in the gigantic Marvel Cinematic Universe. Furthermore, it would even be too far-fetched of a dream that Marvel Studios might let Tatum continue playing the character in future MCU movies.

I can’t [confirm Gambit is coming in a future live-action project]! [laughs] But I’m glad that you were so touched.

Kevin Feige had stated when he was asked by ScreenRant about the possibility of the mutant making it to live-action after the character died in X-Men ’97. While we know that Gambit eventually appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, albeit via a cameo, it is unlikely that Marvel Studios would let Tatum continue in the role while trying to build up their X-Men tale from the ground up, probably looking for younger actors to cast to prevent the chaos of recasting.

Fans React to the Possibility of Channing Tatum Being MCU’s Gambit

With Marvel Studios gearing up to kick start their X-Men narrative, the studio will likely go for younger actors to cast, since they won’t want to scramble to replace actors anytime soon. In such a scenario, it is unlikely Channing Tatum will have his dream fulfilled of starring in a standalone Gambit film, let alone being MCU’s sole Gambit in future MCU projects.

While Marvel fans have been appreciating the actor for his portrayal and nailing that accent, they too reckon that the actor will receive the same treatment as John Krasinski’s Reed Richard did. This is what fans have to say about the possibility of the Magic Mike star continuing as Gambit in the MCU:

While many Marvel fans also expressed their hope to see Channing Tatum as Gambit again, others reckon the actor’s cameo was just a fan service and a chance to give Tatum what he has been dreaming of for so long, With Marvel Studios busy trying to bring the mutants into the huge Marvel Cinematic Universe, we nonetheless hope to see Tatum again, probably as an alternate version of the character. For now, it will be better to wait and watch.
