Harrison Ford is, and forever will remain, an enduring icon in the film industry. However, despite his remarkable career and iconic roles, he remains notably unruffled by the accolades and discussions surrounding his journey as an actor.
And he once again proved the same, when asked about his iconic role as Indiana Jones and the new role as Thunderbolt Ross in the MCU. Instead of directly addressing the question, he sidestepped by humorously touching upon the longstanding debate surrounding his Star Wars character Han Solo.
Harrison Ford Deflects Role Comparison with Humorous Han Solo Debate
After embodying iconic characters like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford is set to make his MCU debut as Thunderbolt Ross, aka Red Hulk in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World.
Ford recently joined the cast of the film at the San Diego Comic-Con to promote his new film. However, he was met with an unexpected question, when IGN asked him whether his beloved character Indiana Jones would get along with Marvel’s President Ross.
However, the actor skillfully avoided answering the question directly, remarking, “I very carefully do not [answer that question.]” However, he rather compared the situation to the enduring debate about who shot first between Greedo and Han Solo in Episode IV.
“That’s like who shot first, Greedo or Han,” he said before complimenting the reporter’s Marvel-themed shirt. “What a nice shirt! Oh, it’s a Marvel shirt. It’s marvelous. You look marvelous,” Ford said, before reiterating, “I don’t answer that question.”
While Ford did not provide a definitive response, he has previously expressed a preference for Indiana Jones over Han Solo, amidst the ongoing debate about the latter’s encounter with Greedo in A New Hope.
What is the Long-Standing Star Wars Debate Over Who Shot First?
George Lucas introduced Harrison Ford as one of the most iconic cinematic characters Han Solo in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. In a notable scene, Solo encounters Greedo, which ends with the bounty hunter’s death.
There have been discussions regarding “Who shot first?” in the sequence with a controversy stemming from the fact that Solo’s initial act of shooting an unarmed individual seemed to tarnish his character’s image.
The filmmaker later altered the narrative by situating that it was Greedo who shot first and even added an edited sequence, aiming to portray Han Solo as less ruthless. However, many still find the captain of the Millennium Falcon guilty due to the release version.
While the filmmaker and his co-stars along with millions of fans have shared their opinions on the debate, the actor himself has remained unfazed by the whole thing. When asked to weigh in on the debate while promoting The Force Awakens, he said, “I don’t care.”
The Star Wars actor had a similar response in a Reddit Ask Me Anything. “I don’t know and I don’t care,” he said, clarifying his disinterest in the discussion. This has also been the reason Ford is beloved by millions worldwide, as fans now eagerly anticipate his new role in the MCU as Thunderbolt Ross and the Red Hulk.
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope is available to stream on Disney+.
