Todd Howard Is Taking His Time With Elder Scrolls 6

The studio is known for taking its time with games. Fallout 4 came out in 2015, and fans had to wait until 2023 for Starfield. Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are in the pipeline, but there’s no set release date yet.

In the interview, Howard said that if he wasn’t making these games, he’d be playing them all the time. He spends his weekends hopping between Starfield, Fallout 76, and Fallout 4, which shows just how passionate he is about his own games. Touch of narcissism?

But making great games takes time. The developer focuses on quality, and that’s something fans appreciate. Even if that quality has greatly diminished since Skyrim, maybe they’re hoping to return to form with their next game.

Howard emphasized that they want to get it right. But he also acknowledged that they need to find ways to speed up their output. Waiting years between games isn’t ideal for anyone. Howard didn’t go into specifics as to how Bethesda plans to speed things up, but it’s gonna be a long wait.

The game is probably going to be released around 2027-2028, or even later, given the studio’s development timelines. That would be more than fifteen years since the last installment in this legendary franchise.

The recent Amazon show based on Fallout has stirred up even more excitement for the franchise. The show explores a new story within the Fallout universe and has been a big hit, leading to drastic increases in player count for other games in the franchise.

The hype around the show has made fans even more eager for new games. Howard mentioned that the show’s success adds pressure on the studio to deliver new content faster, and their next game after Elder Scrolls will be a Fallout game.

Fallout 76, despite its rocky launch, has found its footing with continuous updates and a loyal player base. The developer’s commitment to improving the game over time has definitely paid off. Fallout 4, on the other hand, received a next-gen update a few months ago. Starfield is also set to receive yearly expansion packs.

With all these projects in play, it’s clear the studio has a lot on its plate. But Howard’s comments suggest they’re keenly aware of the need to balance quality with speed, although neither he nor Bethesda has openly acknowledged that Starfield was subpar.

In the meantime, players can enjoy more Fallout via Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, both of which are on Game Pass along with the rest of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchise.
