Hugh Jackman’s yellow costume made even grown men sob on the sets of Deadpool & Wolverine. The emotions are understandable considering the character was robbed of his comic book identity in the films for a very long time. Wolverine’s yellow costume didn’t sit well with the X-Men makers who believed it to be too childish to include in the film.

However, James Mangold had plans to bring the costume to one of his Fox Universe films. He shot an alternate ending scene in The Wolverine where he teased the classic yellow and brown suit for Jackman’s character. The setup was eventually removed from the film.

James Mangold teased Wolverine’s yellow suit in the alternate ending of The Wolverine in 2013. When Hugh Jackman‘s Logan boards the plane, Yukio presents him with a box containing a pair of yellow glows and a mask inside. It was ultimately left out of the film but featured in the Unleashed Edition of the film.

During an interview with ScreenRant, Mangold explained the suit’s absence sharing that it was too narcissistic of Logan to put on a special branded outfit to do good deeds. He explained that the loner personality of the character wouldn’t wear a colorful attention-grabbing costume. Moreover, the costume wouldn’t have suited the old-man Logan storyline in the sequel film Logan.

Fans on X discussed the alternate ending of The Wolverine once again, now that they got to see him in the classic suit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Some fans shared that it was unfair for them to have waited ten more years to see the comic-accurate suit. Some of the fan reactions read:

The first X-Men film initially had all the actors wear black leather jumpsuits. In one of the scenes, James Marsden‘s Cyclops even breaks the fourth wall when he asks Wolverine, “What would you prefer, yellow spandex?”. The films eventually came around to the idea that comic-accurate suits were actually cool.

However, Wolverine kept on donning casuals in the films, which suited his loner personality. One thing Deadpool & Wolverine managed to get right and even tear up the audience was the backstory about why Logan decided to wear the yellow suit. The Wolverine variant in the film felt guilty that he didn’t wear the costume despite his deceased fellow X-Men’s request.

During an interview with Hey U Guys, the executive producer of Deadpool & Wolverine, Wendy Jacobson, shared that Wolverine’s iconic look made many of the cast & crew members emotional. He shared that Hugh Jackman wearing the costume was “one of the craziest things” he had seen on set.

When Jackman came out wearing the yellow suit during the camera test, Jacobson could see many grown men sobbing on set. Jacobson shared:

It was the camera test. It was before we started shooting. And to see both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing, but Hugh walking out in the yellow and blue, I mean, there were grown men sobbing on set. So we knew it was a very special thing.

Earlier, director Shawn Levy also told EW that he had to fight to get the yellow and blue costume in the film since he had no idea whether this was their last shot at Wolverine. He added that he had waited like the rest of the fans for two decades to get to see this moment on screen.

The Wolverine is now available for streaming on Disney+. Deadpool & Wolverine is now running successfully in theaters.
