Hideo Kojima Talks About Glen Powell’s Twisters

The 2024 disaster film, Twisters follows in the footsteps of its predecessor by focusing on the lives of storm chasers as they pursue tornadoes. Directed by Jan de Bont, the 1996 Twister is known for its depiction of tornadoes through groundbreaking visual effects.

It kept viewers hooked with intense storm scenes and the palpable danger feelings that the characters were able to feel, creating an iconic rollercoaster viewer experience.

The same magic can be evident in its sequel, which emphasized the thrill of chasing the tornados, reminiscing the phenomenon seen in the original film.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Glen Powell project inculcates the same legacy with advanced VFX, creating a stunning experience for audiences.

Hideo Kojima himself praised the project for keeping the values attached, which was visible in the 1996 movie. He noted that the new movie focused its vision on storm chasers rather than shifting into typical disaster or survival movie tropes.

He also shared his thoughts on the character dynamics, which Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones meticulously brought out. He continued,

The film not only showcases the advanced VFX but also “twists” the drama by the characters and successfully “tornadoes” the audience’s emotions.

Kojima further talked about the movie’s ending, which seemed to be getting a polarized response from everyone. While finding the ending somewhat predictable, he was satisfied.

The “tornado’s path” leading up to the end unfolds in a predictable way, but the last scene was nice. Leaving out the romance between them was also perhaps the correct choice.

As per the creator, leaving out a romantic subplot between the main characters added to the movie’s appeal, which in fact, was Steven Spielberg’s suggestion, making it compelling and aligned to the themes of the original film.

It is widely known that Spielberg made a significant contribution to the movie as he was among the executive producers of the original film.

Given that the main leads’ chemistry was significantly blooming in the film, many were disappointed when the duo didn’t share a kiss at the end, despite a passionate kiss being shot during the production.

In an interview with Collider, Edgar-Jones shared that it was the Jaws director who asked to alter the ending. However, she deemed it to be the right decision otherwise the movie would have become a bit cliche.

I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it? Do you know what it is? I think it stops the film feeling too cliched, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story. They’re united by their shared passion for something.

Powell continued,

I also think that this movie is not about them finding love. It’s returning Kate to the thing that she loves, which is storm chasing. So that’s what you have at the end of the movie…I feel like a kiss would be sort of unrepresentative of the right goal at the end of the movie. And it is a good Spielberg note.

Thanks to Spielberg’s eyes for detail, the 2024 project succeeded in capturing the essence of its predecessor while introducing new elements to enhance the overall narrative.

According to When to StreamTwisters is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on August 13.
