Mark Hamill became a household name for playing the role of Luke Skywalker, the primary protagonist of the original Star Wars trilogy. The films saw Luke going on a journey to discover his connection to the Force while also learning about his past, particularly his mysterious parentage.

After the second installment, The Empire Strikes Back revealed a major twist regarding Luke’s father, and Hamill was left shell-shocked. As a result, the actor was left questioning whether George Lucas would pull off another similar twist with a different masked character. Here is what Mark Hamill felt about Star Wars revealing Luke’s mother.
The Empire Strikes Back Twist Left Mark Hamill Expecting a Boba Fett Twist
Mark Hamill‘s Luke Skywalker faces off against Darth Vader in the final moments of The Empire Strikes Back. The film ends with Vader emphatically revealing that he is Luke’s father. The twist was so surprising for Hamill that it left the actor second-guessing every other masked character.

On the Blu-ray audio commentary for the Return of the Jedi, Hamill expressed his views on the twist and the revelation of Luke and Leia being siblings. The actor admitted that the twists left him so disoriented that he was expecting George Lucas to reveal Boba Fett as Luke’s mother.
I thought when they unmask Boba Fett, it’s going to be my mother or something wild.
Hamill made the above statement (via Looper) revealing that he was fully expecting Lucas to pull off another surprise twist with the masked bounty hunter.
The Luke Skywalker actor was left even more confused when Lucas decided to kill off Fett, one of the franchise’s breakout characters, in the early moments of Return of the Jedi. Moreover, Hamill was also shocked about how anti-climatic Fett’s death was in the final film.
Mark Hamill Pitched Boba Fett as Luke Skywalker’s Mother
While Hamill expecting some sort of twist with Boba Fett’s true identity might have stemmed from the “I’m your father” twist, the actor has admitted that he was serious about the idea, at least to a certain extent.

In 2018, Hamill took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and revealed that he had pitched Fett as Luke Skywalker’s mother to George Lucas. The actor wrote the following, recalling his jestful pitch for the twist:
I once suggested it to George as the only way we could top Vader being my father.
Hamill added that he envisioned Luke’s mother working as a double agent but ultimately being on the side of the Rebels. As a result, the actor felt it made sense for Fett to be revealed as Luke’s mother.
However, Hamill admitted that Lucas hated the idea, and rightfully since the filmmaker seemingly had a rough idea of who Luke’s mother would be. Lucas returned to the franchise almost sixteen years later with the prequel trilogy which revealed Natalie Portman’s Padmé Amidala as Luke and Leia’s mother.
