Similar to No Way Home, bringing back past Marvel icons has worked out extremely well for Deadpool & Wolverine, which is in line to become one of the biggest 2024 releases. It appears that Sony is also inching towards this approach for its upcoming release, Venom: The Last Dance.
While Venom‘s success at the box office back in 2018 gave Sony the perfect platform to build their Spider-Man cinematic universe, things haven’t gone quite their way since then. With the sequel to the 2018 movie being the lone exception, it seems Sony is also following in the Ryan Reynolds-led film’s footsteps to reignite the spark in the Sony Cinematic Universe.
Reshoots for Venom: The Last Dance Has Reignited Spider-Man Speculations
For a while, fans have been speculating that Sony might finally bring its own version of Spider-Man ever since Andrew Garfield reprised the role back in No Way Home. Similar was the sentiment prior to the release of Sony’s last major mishap, Madame Web, as some felt it might incorporate Garfield or Tom Holland’s web-slinger in some capacity.
Now, with Venom: The Last Dance around the corner, the recent reports of its reshoot in New York have further added fuel to the fire.
With the threequel just two months away from its planned release, which will also serve as the last chapter of Tom Hardy‘s run as Venom, the reshoots have once again reinvigorated these speculations. Considering Deadpool 3 has heavily benefited from Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and other boatloads of cameos, it won’t be surprising if Sony is also heading towards a similar path to breathe new fire into the SCU.
While it remains to be seen if Garfield or Holland did end up making an appearance in the threequel, considering how the rest of the SCU has played out till now, one shouldn’t get their hopes too high.
Tom Hardy on the Scale of Venom 3
Apart from the usual Spider-Man speculations, which have been the case since SCU’s inception, Tom Hardy stressed they’ve gone much bigger with Venom: The Last Dance. Directed by Kelly Marcel, the Mad Max star shared it was important for them to put everything into the threequel, and make the most out of this opportunity.
This one – I’m so, so excited about because we’ve gone much bigger… To me and Kelly, it’s so important to pour in everything that we can to build on that opportunity
While it’s safe to say Venom 3 will perform well at the box office, as it has been the lone stable franchise under the Sony umbrella, it’ll be interesting to see if this could put the SCU on the map.
Venom: The Last Dance is slated to release on November 8, 2024
