Monkey D. Garp has been a legendary One Piece figure since the beginning of the series. He was considered among the ranks of heavy hitters like Gol D. Roger and Rocks D. Xebec. But fans never got to see the real power of the character until the Marineford arc. This was the same point where some fans questioned his principles as he decided to choose his duty over his grandson Ace.

The same question arose again during the Wano arc when Luffy was fighting 2 Emperors of the Sea, Big Mom and Kaido. And now, when he went on to save his apprentice Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates, the same faction has once again shown some anger towards the Vice Admiral.

Garp’s Relationship With His Grandsons

Ever since One Piece started, Garp has made his intentions clear about wanting his grandsons Luffy and Ace to join the Navy. He even trained them to be strong Navy admirals so that they could do right with their lives. However, both Luffy and Ace have always wanted to be pirates from an early age.

Irrespective of that, Ace and Luffy have the utmost respect for their grandfather and always care for him in their own ways. This care was seen during the Marineford arc when Garp showed his true emotions about Ace being executed and Luffy trying to save him. This was also their last interaction together in the One Piece series as of yet.

While Ace died, Luffy went on to become an Emperor, and Garp was seen laughing when he heard about Luffy fighting two yonkos at once. This in a way showed that Garp knew what Luffy was capable of and had confidence in his grandson to win against two of the biggest villains of the series.

Ace Fans Might Not Be Happy With Garp’s Recent Endeavors

Garp’s character was always highlighted for not even trying to save his grandsons, Luffy and Ace when they were in deep trouble. But his latest feat in One Piece episode 1114 has ignited some rage within Ace fans. Fans have once again questioned Garp’s ideals about doing the right thing.

No hate but I really don’t like garp now because when ace going to die and need him then he was doing nothing and after kody got kidnapped he is furious

ki6an_raj_._ commented:

luffy his grandson and koby his pupil that is a BIG difference

jay._.singha commented:

That’s the kinda support the three brothers could’ve had. And this is why Garp insisted them to be marines.

Monkey D. Garp’s character development is currently at its peak in the One Piece anime and as the series progresses, fans will get to know what he will go through in the later part of the series. However, considering Eiichiro Oda’s brilliance as a mangaka, he must have planned something special for the Monkey family at the conclusion of One Piece.
