For those active on social media, Abigail Thorn is a well-known name, but her role in a high-profile series like House of the Dragon has really caught fans’ attention. Introduced in the season two finale, her character is set to become a key player for Team Green.

Thorn had already teased her role with a post on X before the episode dropped, but a particular detail caught fans by surprise. The adaptation introduced a female version of Admiral Sharako Lohar, a character who is male in the books.

Despite this, she is still repeatedly referred to as a man in the episode. To explain this, showrunner Ryan Condal mentioned on the official House of the Dragon podcast that the character is misgendered by her colleagues because of her leadership role:

This is a woman in a man’s role as a fleet commander and this is a highly patriarchal society. All these salty sea dogs she’s surrounded with, all these men, their brains cannot process the idea that they’re saluting a woman who’s leading this massive fleet of ships at the end. So, she presents herself as a masculine character in the classic sense and then they sort of just accept it. And that’s why they all follow her.

Fans were quick to react to Thorn’s addition to the series:

Born in the UK, the 31-year-old actress kicked off her career as a YouTuber. In response to rising university fees in the UK, Thorn started her own channel, Philosophy Tube, in 2013. There, she offered online philosophy lessons covering works by thinkers like René Descartes and Immanuel Kant. As her channel evolved, she expanded her content to include mental health and current affairs.

In 2021, Thorn came out as a transgender woman, sharing her transition journey and the challenges faced by the queer community on her channel. Despite her theater background, her visibility has significantly increased thanks to her TV roles in series like Ladhood, Django, and the recent Star Wars spin-off, The Acolyte.

Lohar is a Lys admiral who commands a fleet of 90 warships. In the season finale during Tyland Lannister’s mission to ally with the Greens, Sharako Lohar demands a mud fight as part of the deal. After Lannister accepts the challenge and is invited to dinner, Lohar eventually agrees to deploy his armada into battle. And that’s where the Triarchy comes in.

The Triarchy’s introduction in the first season was brief, featuring the war with Crabfeeder. However, starting in season three, the triad will have a more prominent role. Known as the Kingdoms of the Three Daughters, it is the alliance between Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh — three of the nine Free Cities.

The Triarchy will play a crucial role as it allies with Aegon in the battle for the throne, and participates in the Battle of Gullet, which is set to be one of the most intense and violent confrontations.

According to the books, Lohar’s role will be pivotal as she faces criticism for her battle decisions. This scrutiny will lead to accusations and disputes, setting the stage for what becomes known as The Daughters’ War.
