Arrowhead Game Studios excited fans when it announced the biggest yet update for Helldivers 2 titled Escalation of Freedom. The update is now live and brings new enemies, locations, missions, gameplay changes, and more.
While players are loving the update so far, the developer seems to have messed up one of the weapons. Players have been complaining that the latest Helldivers 2 patch has nerfed the flamethrower and it’s almost useless now.
Helldivers 2 Nerfs Flamethrower With Escalation of Freedom Update
The Escalation of Freedom patch has brought several major changes and made some balancing updates and fixes. A bunch of weapon and stratagems have been fixed and balanced but the flamethrower getting nerfed has surprised the fans and they are left disappointed as the weapon is not what it used to be.
The developer has mentioned the changes done to the weapon in the patch notes. But the changes do no affect the flamethrower directly, instead the flame effects and how they function in the game. Arrowhead has adjusted the flame effects for them to “work more realistically.” This is not a bad thing but fans don’t seem to like it.

Arrowhead explained it saying, “It doesn’t go through various bodies/objects where bounce off would be the expected behavior, like on armors and static objects.” This means that the weapon that was once known for bringing down chargers easily, is now no longer able to do it and it’s sad, honestly.
Fans Are Not Okay With This Unexpected Change

Several Helldivers 2 fans have slammed the developer for this across social media and have said that the weapon has become useless now. Player have said that this change has made this massive update “obsolete.”
In a now deleted post, one fan said, “Flamethrower can’t kill Chargers now. Doesn’t go through their leg armor anymore.” They added, “It also feels like crap to use, and since it seem like it doesn’t penetrate through multiple enemies anymore is also completely pathetic against regular bugs too. It got the railgun nerf treatment.”
Another player added, “Flamer was just perfect. It could kill chargers and behemoths but it was balanced, adding “now its just useless.”

Some fans just couldn’t believe this move from Arrowhead and some questioned why the developer would do this. Whatever be the reason, the once favorite Chargers killer weapon is now of zero use for players and they might just become the food for these bugs.
Arrowhead has been quick to take players feedback and turn things around. As the distaste grows towards this change, it would be interesting to see how Helldivers 2 developer reacts to this and what it does to cater to players’ requests.
