While Ryan Reynolds already upped the stakes with Hugh Jackman’s Logan returning after retirement, Deadpool & Wolverine has more surprises in store for fans. However, a huge surprise was Channing Tatum’s cameo as Gambit in the film. Tatum was supposed to play the role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but was replaced by Taylor Kitsch in the film as Tatum had to film GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. A solo film with Tatum was also in development but was stuck for years.

Deadpool & Wolverine Director Said Channing Tatum Improvised His Lines

Ryan Reynolds is known for improvising his lines and is also credited as a writer in Deadpool & Wolverine along with Shawn Levy, Rhett Reese, Zeb Wells, and Paul Wernick. However, Reynolds was reportedly not the only improviser on set. According to Levy, Channing Tatum came up with many lines in his Cajun accent as Gambit.

Talking to Variety about Tatum’s legendary performance, Levy said,

We had scripted a lot of those borderline nonsensical lines. We wrote them into the screenplay. But then Channing added a lot of Cajun and French flavor. To this day, there are some things he says — like when he sees Hugh drinking his liquor and he throws a charged-up card his way, he says something that sounds a lot like cooyain-zwah — where I don’t f*cking know the words.

Levy also mentioned that the line from Deadpool about Gambit’s dialect coach was reportedly also an on-set improvisation.
