One of the scenes also featured Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, and the co-writers of Deadpool & Wolverine revealed a surprising bit of information! Sitting in an interview with IndieWire, the co-writers had a lot to say about the cameos.

The interviewer asked the writers whether they had asked Robert Downey Jr. for help. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed that they didn’t even know about Downey Jr.’s appearance as Doctor Doom.

We had wanted him to do a cameo. We had written that scene [to start] with Happy and Downey.

Reese further added,

Ryan Reynolds read the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey. But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together.

However, since the writers had no idea that Downey Jr. was going to portray the role of Doctor Doom, the cameo proved too hard to pull off for the co-writers and Ryan Reynolds.

As the interview further continued, the co-writers revealed that they had full faith in Ryan Reynold’s convincing abilities. However, what they didn’t know was that behind the scenes, Downey Jr. was preparing for the role of Doctor Doom.

The Co-Writers Didn’t Know About Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom

It was quite obvious that the actor wouldn’t be able to do both. Either it would have been a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, or it would be his re-entry into the MCU as Doctor Doom.

As the interview further continued, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese stated that they had no idea about Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom. They weren’t able to believe that Downey Jr. would turn down Ryan Reynold’s convincing powers!

Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about the Doctor Doom. And there’s no way he was going to do both. And then we said, “Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds, does he?

He further continued,

No one says no to Ryan Reynolds.” And Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing

Well, it does make sense why Downey Jr. would choose to appear as Doctor Doom in the MCU, rather than a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, the cameo will surely be missed.

Upon its release, the MCU film received a rating of 8.1/10 on IMDB and a whopping 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is currently screening in theaters around the world.
