Deadpool has been somewhat of an event in and of itself in the past decade. When the Ryan Reynolds-helmed IP took off in 2016 (or 2014, if we’re being honest about that leaked test footage), a new leaf was turned over in Hollywood’s book of records, ensuring the dawn of a new era of cinema that was as maddeningly liberating as it was riotous fun.

For the first time in history, a movie star in the recesses of his career was given the power and the money to actively mock and call out multi-billion dollar industries, studio houses, and megacorporations on purpose.

In return, Ryan Reynolds wielded that power responsibly, slowly bringing together the Marvel fandom together from the sidelines, amassing an army of fans and supporters, and in Kevin Feige’s most dire time of need, answering the call to arms by rising to his ultimate destiny as Marvel Jesus.

Ryan Reynolds vs. T.J. Miller: A Complicated Saga

The controversy that defines the falling out between Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller is a layered one that involves an unproportionate mixture of grudges, egos, hurt sentiments, and misinterpretations. And like most misjudged incidents, it all started with one person who took his liberty of expression too far across the line.

The curse of the Merc With the Mouth, in real life, causes him to burn bridges fast instead of serving up snazzy dialogues for the entertainment of comic book readers. Outside these pages and off the screen, however, a person in a position of authority can only say so much before attracting negative attention.

As far as the situation between Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller is concerned, one dialogue of exposition sparked the creative monster within the lead actor of Deadpool during filming, when the actor ad-libbing one-liners that rubbed Miller the wrong way.

Later, in an interview, Miller (who plays Weasel in Deadpool and Deadpool 2) revealed the extent of unprovoked passive-aggressive animosity that he felt coming off of Ryan Reynolds on set. In an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, Miller called Reynolds “kind of an insecure dude,” saying:

Would I work with him again? No, I would not work with him again. We had a really weird moment on Deadpool where he said, ‘Let’s do one more take.’ And then as the character, he was horrifically mean to me as if I’m Weasel. So he was like, ‘You know what’s great about you, Weasel? You’re not the star, but you do just enough exposition so that it’s funny, and then we can leave and get back to the real movie.’

Considering that Ryan Reynolds was the lead actor of the film, without any previous catalytic event or instigation, the industry veteran who has been in mainstream cinema since the ’90s wouldn’t risk his pristine reputation in a crowded set simply to throw a handful of ad-libbed, veiled, one-liner insults at his scene partner.

However, Miller later reneged on his allegations, saying:

It was just me telling a story from on set that I thought was weird. That was it. That’s a big problem I have in general is kind of not thinking about what the repercussions of saying this or that would be.

Ryan Reynolds later e-mailed T.J. Miller after the latter’s claims to settle their misunderstanding. The latter publicly announced on SiriusXM’s Jim Norton & Sam Roberts that the pair were doing fine after the Deadpool star reached out.

Ryan Reynolds’ Love-Hate Bond With Blade Legend

For every story about industry friends and acquaintances, there has been an account of falling out between stars who have famously stayed out of each other’s way when traveling in the same circles. The story of Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes follows a somewhat similar trajectory.

In 2004, Ryan Reynolds’ hyperactive energy on the set of Blade: Trinity got caught in the crosshairs of Wesley Snipes’ already-strained relationship with the Blade production.

Although not faced with Snipes’ wrath himself, the running joke was that the Blade star couldn’t get along with one of his co-stars, namely Ryan Reynolds, who played the legendary Marvel hero, Hannibal King in the Blade threequel. The 20-year-old incident even earned a nod in his Marvel epic Deadpool & Wolverine which had the fans choking on air when Wesley Snipes suddenly stalked onto the screen in a surprise Blade cameo.

While the cameo worked in favor of removing doubts about Reynolds and Snipes’ current working relationship, it did the opposite for T.J. Miller. Fans have been pointing out how a 20-year-old animosity was put to rest by Ryan Reynolds and the famously difficult-to-work-with actor Wesley Snipes.

When it came to Miller, despite appearing in two of the previous Deadpool films, the actor couldn’t even earn a side gig in the third one. That already says everything there is to know about the fragile relationship between Ryan Reynolds and his former on-screen sidekick.
