Revisiting classic titles with a modern lens has become a popular trend in the video game industry. This has often led to remakes and remasters of old games to give them new appeal. Capcom’s upcoming Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is the latest example of this approach.

The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is going to be a massive graphical and visual overhaul. But it will also be a reimagining that addresses some of the more problematic elements of the original game.

The new change in the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster that’s been reported is the removal of the “Erotica” photo mechanic. In the 2006 original, players could earn Prestige Points (PP) by taking photos of suggestive images of female characters. These points were often awarded for capturing images of women’s cleavage, underwear, or other revealing angles.

While this mechanic was played for laughs at the time, it probably hasn’t aged well and could be considered inappropriate by today’s standards. According to a new look at the game’s features via Famitsu, the remaster will no longer reward players for taking such photos.

This change mirrors a similar decision made during the development of the Resident Evil 4 remake, where Capcom removed a scene that allowed players to look up the skirt of a female character, Ashley. In both cases, the company is clearly aiming to align these beloved games with newer standards of taste and sensitivity.

Capcom has also redesigned some characters to remove offensive stereotypes. Larry Chiang, a Psychopath butcher from the original game, has been given a significant visual overhaul to eliminate his portrayal as a racist caricature.

These changes could be a hint of the studio’s ongoing commitment to cultural sensitivity and its willingness to re-evaluate past decisions that may no longer hold up under current societal norms.

How Far Will This Change Affect The Game?

Despite these changes, fans have been assured that many of the elements that made Dead Rising a cult classic will remain intact. The remaster will still feature the dynamic and often absurd gameplay that players loved, such as the ability to use everyday objects as weapons against the zombie horde. It’s also confirmed that Lifeseeker’s iconic song “Gone Guru” will return.

In addition to removing the Erotica bonus, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will feature a range of other updates and improvements. For example, the remaster will include new facial motion capture and fully voiced dialogue for all characters, including minor ones.

The remaster will also include practical updates like improved survivor AI, which will make escort missions less frustrating. Additionally, the new control scheme allows players to move while aiming and makes the game more fluid and responsive.

The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is set for digital release on September 19, 2024, with a physical edition following on November 8.
