However, he left the series before the premiere of the first season for yet-to-be-confirmed reasons.
DeMayo shared that the announcements regarding the second season sounded promising and aligned with his creative vision. Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Animation and Television at Marvel, showed up for the panel at D23 alongside voice actors Cal Dodd and Lenore Zann.
Beau DeMayo’s Comments After X-Men ’97 Season 2 Update At D23 Sound Promising For Fans
Brad Winderbaum released a few major updates about the second season of X-Men ’97. During the Marvel Animation presentation, Winderbaum introduced the new outfits of the team, inspired by Grant Morrison’s run of the X-Men comics. These suits were designed by artist Frank Quitely. Winderbaum also revealed that other characters like Polaris, Danger, Havoc, and Apocalypse will also appear in the new season.
X-Men ’97 former showrunner Beau DeMayo had a few positive things to share with fans after Marvel’s update. Commenting on the introduction of Polaris, he shared that she was one of his favorite mutants and that he found a way to introduce her into the X-Men ’97 universe. I told you all she was one of my favorites and I always find a way to work my favorites in #XMen97 #polaris https://t.co/pewwg7AwVE

He shared that the new Grant Morrison comics-inspired costumes had a lot to do with some of the important upcoming storylines and themes of the series. He further commented that the new suits had strong ties to Genosha and the E in the logo stood for Extinction.
As with all costume changes, this decision was rooted in story for me and the themes Season 2 will explore. Obviously, these suits have strong ties to Genosha and E is for Extinction. #xmen97 https://t.co/dcVZ5Somip

One of the fans also asked the creator about his level of involvement in the second season of the critically acclaimed series. He shared that the whole season was entirely his idea when he left the project, but couldn’t confirm if Marvel kept it as such. However, he shared that the announcements so far seemed aligned with his original vision.
When I left, all of it. Now, who knows? I’ll find out when you do but all these announcements today align with my original vision and creative decisions.

DeMayo’s comments about the second season have definitely piqued the fan interest for the season. Along with X-Men ’97 Season 2, fans also got a glimpse of What If…? Season 3 and Eyes of Wakanda. Winderbaum addressed the fan love for the X-Men animated series reboot but added that all animated shows may not carry the same art style.
Matthew Chauncey Was Confirmed As The New Writer For X-Men ’97 Season 3
Beau DeMayo earlier confirmed in a tweet that he will not be involved in the cast records, design, editorial, post, or music of the upcoming second season of the show. He also added that he would not be doing any production rewrites as well. Marvel has already found a replacement for him in the third season, roping in Matthew Chauncey as the lead writer.
Chauncey is known for his work in Marvel’s other acclaimed animated project What If…?. According to Deadline, Chauncey will work alongside X-Men ’97 director Jake Castorena in Season 3. The reports also suggested that DeMayo’s scripts for Season 2 have been revised.
Fans expect an explosive Season 2 (and Season 3) from the series like its first season. X-Men ’97 is now available for streaming on Disney+.
