The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco was devastated upon losing her role to Kate Hudson in Netflix’s Knives Out sequel starring Daniel Craig. Renowned for her role as Penny and her Emmy-nominated performance in The Flight Attendant, the actress was deeply disheartened to lose a coveted role alongside the former James Bond star in the crime mystery.
While she was confident about landing the role in the film, Cuoco was crushed after learning that she had lost, what could have marked a major opportunity in her film career, to Kate Hudson.
Kaley Cuoco Revealed Heartbreak Over Losing Major Movie Role to Kate Hudson
After completing her tenure with the CBS sitcom, Kaley Cuoco dove into a range of new roles, including a potential part in the 2022 film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
In an earlier interview with Glamour, the actress revealed that she was in the running for the role of Birdie Jay, which ultimately went to Kate Hudson. Cuoco described having gone through several stages, from chemistry reads to Zoom calls.
And she was very confident about landing the part. “I was convinced [the part was mine],” she said before adding, “I was so convinced that my bags were packed for Greece.”
Cuoco admitted that, while she usually handles rejection well, this particular loss hit her hard. “I was so devastated,” she said, explaining, “I cried and I cried all night long. And it went to Kate.”
She further shared,
I mean, I was gutted over that. And that’s when I thought I was on fire, like, I’m for sure getting that. And they were like, “No, we’re going to go with Kate.“
She also expressed her disappointment over missing out on the role as it could have been a huge opportunity for her to share the screen with some of the most acclaimed actors such as Daniel Craig and Edward Norton.
Why Did Kaley Cuoco Lose Her Knives Out Role?
Further into the conversation, Kaley Cuoco was asked if she was told the reason for not landing the role against Kate Hudson. The actress revealed that she was not given any reason for the rejection.
However, despite losing the role to the Oscar-nominated actress, Cuoco had no hard feelings towards her. “Knives is going to be great and Kate’s great,” Cuoco said before adding, “She was supposed to do it.”
Cuoco also expressed optimism for future opportunities, hoping to audition for the third installment of the franchise. “Maybe I’ll get to audition for the third one,” she told Glamour in the interview.
Knives Out is a popular murder mystery film series that follows Daniel Craig in the role of detective Benoit Blanc as he investigates and resolves mysteries. The previous films have received positive reviews.
A third installment in the franchise titled, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, is under production. Craig is set to reprise his role as Benoit Blanc alongside an ensemble cast, including Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, and Glenn Close.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is expected to be released in 2025.
