Who knew the Merc with a Mouth had such a dark side? Before Deadpool and Wolverine teamed up, Ryan Reynolds had an even crazier idea for the red-suited anti-hero.

The Deadpool franchise is famous for its offbeat humor and wild pop culture references—from the chaotic opening credits of the first film to the jaw-dropping Like a Prayer massacre in the latest one. The series has a knack for mixing violence with unexpected musical choices. But it turns out, things could have been even wilder.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via Slash Film), screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that Reynolds originally pitched a ‘Deadpool vs. Zombies’ movie. Just imagine Deadpool slicing and dicing his way through hordes of undead, all set to the beat of Madonna’s 1989 iconic chart-topper anthem. Wernick spilled the tea:

Before it was Deadpool Corps, it was zombies. I think it was November of 2021… [Reynolds] pitched this idea of Deadpool versus Zombies. The climax of the movie being Deadpool, going down the line and to Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’. And we were like, ‘Oh, that’s f***ing badass. That’s cool.’

Unfortunately, this idea was eventually shelved in favor of the Deadpool Corps. But let’s be real, a Deadpool zombie movie would have been a bold, bloody, and undeniably entertaining twist on the superhero genre.

While Deadpool & Wolverine may not have delivered the zombie apocalypse we craved, they still rocked the big screen. Here’s hoping for a future Deadpool project that brings Reynolds’ original vision to life. After all, in Deadpool’s world, anything is possible, and a zombie-filled adventure could still be on the horizon.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are officially Hollywood’s golden couple. The duo has conquered the box office, becoming the first married pair in 34 years to simultaneously top the charts (per Wio News).

Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine continues its reign as box office king, raking in over $54 million in its third week and crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide. Meanwhile, Lively’s romantic drama, It Ends With Us, made a splash with a $50 million debut.

Their combined success echoes the 1990 box office battle between Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. However, not all was rosy at the box office. The highly anticipated video game adaptation, Borderlands, starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, bombed spectacularly with a mere $8.8 million opening.

Deadpool & Wolverine continues to break records, becoming the second R-rated film to hit $1 billion and one of the most successful Marvel movies ever. With Inside Out 2 as the only other film surpassing $1 billion this year, it’s clear that Reynolds and his superhero alter ego are dominating the box office landscape.

Deadpool & Wolverine hit screens on July 26, 2024.
