In 2014, it was announced Channing Tatum was set to headline a Gambit film, initially slated to hit the theatres in 2016. Unfortunately, the film never fit the release schedule, as apart from undergoing three major rewrites, the film also lost three directors before even entering production.
Moreover, Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Tatum’s passion project, as the industry giant wasted no time in clearing Fox’s slate, axing Gambit in the process. However, Deadpool & Wolverine has once again reignited the hopes for a Gambit feature, and Ryan Reynolds has got the actor’s complete back for it.
Ryan Reynolds Has Some Encouraging Words for Channing Tatum’s Gambit
Speaking of Gambit’s revival in Deadpool & Wolverine, Channing Tatum shared that Ryan Reynolds “took Gambit out of truly, like, the grave”. Tatum is also hopeful that it’ll not be just a one-off thing like John Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic, and following Reynolds’ involvement in reigniting discussion surrounding his lost Gambit feature, Tatum will “forever be grateful to him.”.
Reflecting on his interview, Reynolds took to his IG story to share “It’s impossible not to love and root for @channingtatum”. Although it remains to be seen if a Gambit feature is eventually greenlit under the Disney umbrella, the Deadpool star is confident and even stressed that he’ll do whatever Tatum wants him to do for the film.
His story read:
When he makes a Gambit movie, I’ll return the favour. If he needs someone to carry sandbags, I’m in. If hje needs a Deadpool, I can do that. Someone to provide fresh orange slices to the crew, no problem. Name it.
However, while Feige entertained the idea of a Gambit film, Tatum shared that, at the moment, the MCU boss doesn’t know how to fit Gambit into the MCU’s current scheme of things. On the bright side, the Magic Mike star stressed that they’ve “sort of cracked a little bit of the code”, so there is hopefully some light at the end of the tunnel.
Channing Tatum Had an Out-Of-Body Experience in Deadpool & Wolverine
Before his canned Gambit feature, there were plans to incorporate Tatum’s Remy LeBeau in X-Men: Apocalypse, which would’ve set up his planned origin film. But after eight years, the actor finally got to live his dream and team up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and other Marvel superheroes.
Speaking of his experience of standing next to so many Marvel icons, Tatum described it as an out-of-body experience.
I was having an out-of-body experience just standing next to Hugh. It was like, ‘Oh, my God, there’s Wolverine. There’s Blade! Elektra – everyone’s here, this is wild.’
Fans will hope his brief appearance in the Deadpool threequel isn’t the last of Tatum in the MCU, as the actor joked he’d “do lots of terrible things” to make the project a reality.
Deadpool & Wolverine is currently running in theatres.
