Ryan Reynolds’ billion-dollar-grossing flick, Deadpool & Wolverine, had something for everyone. While it gave Marvel fans the dream team-up of the Merc with a Mouth and the brooding adamantium claw-wielding mutant, it also gave fans an unforgettable trip down memory lane. And for others like fans of Channing Tatum, it fulfilled their earnest dreams of seeing the Magic Mike star as Gambit.

Starring as the Cajun-speaking mutant, Tatum did a brilliant job of bringing the character to life. While his role was a small cameo appearance, fans have been hoping to see him again, potentially in his own standalone movie. And they just might do!

While Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool & Wolverine featured a great many number of cameos and surprise appearances, one of the standout scenes of the film was when Channing Tatum made an appearance as Gambit. Originally slated to play the kinetic-energy manipulating mutant since 2006, the actor has harbored a deep love for the character but has failed to land his own film or even a cameo (until now!).

While Tatum’s appearance caused a social media storm, many have been demanding that the actor finally get his solo movie that was put to dust after Disney acquired Fox back in 2019 (see Esquire). Although his reprising the role seems unlikely, given that it is the Marvel Cinematic Universe we are talking about, anything can be made possible with sheer determination and courage.

So, although Marvel will have to cook up some Multiversal arc to make Gambit’s return possible, one scene in Deadpool & Wolverine already gives enough excuse for the character’s return. As per an Instagram user @justthenobodys, this is how:

There is a crazy Deadpool & Wolverine theory about Gambit. At the end of the movie, in the post-credit scene, we see Deadpool in the TVA… there’s actually a little screen… that shows Gambit returning back to his universe, proving and confirming that Channing Tatum will be back as Gambit and he’s still alive.

Since it is the MCU, anything is possible and even such a small scene can end up being vital for Channing Tatum’s return as Gambit. Yet, this is only a theory and we’ll have to wait and watch if Tatum even returns as the mutant or not.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit cameo was undeniably one of the best parts of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine. Initially slated to star as Gambit in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Tatum’s lifelong dream of playing the character finally materialized as a cameo in the billion-dollar blockbuster.

Appearing only as a cameo, Tatum is desperate to play the character once again, potentially in his own MCU flick. In an interview with Variety recently, when asked about a potential Gambit film, Tatum replied,

I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please.

When asked if he had discussed these plans with Marvel, the actor further remarked,

Of course I’ve said it. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God.

Although Kevin Feige had previously stated to ScreenRant that Gambit being in any live-action project was unlikely, fans still have their hopes high. Seeing the excuse Deadpool & Wolverine gives Marvel to bring Tatum back, it would be disappointing for the studio to not utilize the opportunity of bringing a fan-favorite actor and character back to the MCU.

Deadpool & Wolverine is in theatres now.
